An MRI of the brain (specifically the pituitary gland) is often done when a woman's hormones are goofed up. A hysterosalpingiogram is primarily for infertility. It will show if the fallopian tubes are blocked. If you already had an ultrasound and blood work, MRI is usually the next step.

An MRI of the brain is painless. It is of the utmost importance that you remain completely still for the duration of the scan (usually around an hour). Many times, in the middle of the scan, you will receive an injection of a contrast in a vein of your arm. The contrast used in MRI does not cause you to feel funny. In fact, other than a needle stick, you won't know this stuff is in your body. If you are worried about claustrophobia, an open MRI is a good idea. You can also get a sedative prescribed by your doctor. A cd of your favorite music is a good idea. Make sure you wear comfortable clothing...some of my patients show up in their pajamas! You can also bring someone with you (a parent, friend etc) who can sit in the scan room with you.

You are not able to keep a copy of your images unless you want to pay for a copy. My facility charges $15 per sheet of film. For a brain with pituitary gland study, we use 12 sheets of film. You can borrow the films, but they must be returned to the imaging facility. I have found that patients who view their own studies without input from a professional can scare themselves. If you don't know what you are looking at and you don't know what is normal, something which appears completely normal can be scary.

The MRI procedure is painless. You will have to take out all piercings, and remove all metal. If you have problems with claustrophobia (tight spaces) then you should have your doctor prescribe you a sedative to take a few minutes before or try to go to an Open MRI. You will have to ask the hospital or facility whether you can have a copy of your MRI. I keep copies of all of my medical images in case something happens to my facility. There might be a process that you will have to go through to get them. Some places use digital or computed programs so they don't actually print films unless it is okay'd through medical records.

My concern is that you should not be doing an MRI on your brain if there is something wrong with your reproductive system. I think that you should visit with your doctor about other tests that you could have. Ultrasound should do the trick. There is also an X-ray exam that you could try. It is called a Hysterosalpingogram.

Nevertheless, the main thing about MRI is not to be so nervous that you are shaking. You won't get very good diagnostic pictures if you do. Don't worry you will be fine.

I've had an MRI done in college on my brain, for migraines (they checked to see if I had a tumor which was causing the migraines). It is not painful. They will recommend that you take a CD of songs that are relaxing to you (I took some light rock CD I had). They will put the CD on for you to keep you calm. I have claustrophobia so it was very nerve racking for me to be in the MRI machine for so long. You will be in there for an hour or so. You will hear a slight thumping sound that is quite rhytmic and actually turned out to be relaxing. I found it best to take a nap while listening to my music. Please let me know if this was helpful. Good luck to you!

I have always had mine scheduled in the morning and caught another hour or so nap. It really isn't that bad, just more noisy tan anything else. I'm sure you could ask for a copy but you really would need to know what you are looking at. I wouldn't think that you would be posting this on your wall in your room-at least I hope not.

Generally they are painless, loud and boring boring. Some places allow you to take a tape player in with you to listen to music; others don't. I like to listen to books on tape (or CD).

You can get a copy of the picture by offering to pick up the scans and hand carry them to your doctor's office. Then you can open the envelope and take a look. But the scans are not your property, so you will need to return them.

I've had two. Its completely painless, a bit noisy but they give you ear plugs and pretty boring. All they are doing is using some magnetic fields to get an image of your inside bits. Its a bit like X Rays but doesn't have the health risks and can see more.

They will take so many pictures- they took about 250 of my heart. Not sure about letting you keep a picture? I have this big issue about being cremated alive so I was quite scared about the procedure but it is actually quite easy to cope with. The biggest worry is knowing your paper gown has fallen open and you can't bend down to put it back over your bits!
