Many major religions and their holy books, including Catholicism, Islam, and Orthodox Judaism, put women in a secondary, or lower, role in that religion. Do you really think God would not consider a women fully equal to a man? Sounds to me like many religions were created by men. Doesn't that bother you? It bothers me.

DEAR BOTHERED

First, yes, I do believe that God sees men and women as equals. What we must remember is, at the time the Bible (as a Christian I will only speak to that), society dictated roles for men and women and it was written in that context. Now some demoninations do still follow this path, including, yes, the Catholics.

My mother in law is a retired minister, my mom is a lay leader in the church, I am a Biblical scholar. I remember my mother in law saying once...if women really took the back seat as is described in the Bible, the church would cease to exist.

We often hear...if Jesus came today would he???? If Jesus came today I do not think he would feel women were any less than men...but taking it a step farther...I do not believe he ever did.

People who study such things have surmised that is part of the reason Wicca and some of the related Pagan religions are so popular among women. They are Goddess\female based, or at least have a Goddess and a God as equals.

Some of the popularity of The DaVinci Code has been attributed to the appeal of a woman having a much greater role in the church, which was then suppressed. (yes I know it is fiction - it is the idea that is fascinating)

Most will say their religion treats women as equal - even though they cant become priests, cant do this or that in their church, but I think in practice you still see women delegated to lessor roles, and that carries over to culture as well.

Why would I even consider it ? These organizations did this at a time when Men were dominating them. Mary Magdalene was Jeseus's favorite disciple according to agnostic scriptures that were not tainted by the male dominated Catholic church of that day. In fact they, the Catholic church re-wrote her role in his life to portray her as a fallen woman. Type Agnostic scripture into your search engine and you will find the gospel of Mary Magdalene an apostle not a fallen woman..
It doesn't bother that many religions were created by men, only
when they try to elevate men over women. Jesus did not teach that. Most religions are superficial and try to make you believe they have the only way to salvation. The Master quite pointedly
told us to look within, there begins the quest for God. Not in the without or in some organization that is needy of our money.

have you even bothered to study the religions your questioning?

Do you honestly think that people would stay in a religion if the were treated like second class citizens? Its just some religions recognize that men and women are inherently different but not lower.

I suggest you do some research before you make any more ASSumptions.

I can't accept religion that put women in a secondary or lower role, I also can't accept that women are treated exactly as men; what I believe is that women are simply different than men, they are not the same and they are not lower.

a brilliant number of the Pagan religions region women on an in depth, comparable, or greater suitable footing than adult males. maximum of them have female clergy of one million stripe or one greater; in some situations, the female clergy take care of an superior say in how concerns are run. has a tendency to be a edge-very outcome of following a faith that has a goddess/goddesses - you're oftentimes basically slightly greater suitable respectful in direction of women if there's a woman divine.

Yes, and I'm a little more liberal myself in that area with allowing women in the pulpit and the roles in marriage, for instance. I believe that the original writers were merely expressing the culture of their times, and those times have changed. The message hasn't.

Islam does not put a woman in a secondary role to men. It says he simply has a degree in physical strength above her, which is a fact in most cases. Otherwise, women have just as much right to be every part of society as a man. It's unfortunate that the "men" of today ignore the example of the Prophet (PBUH) that they are supposed to follow. He never ordered his wives around and he never insulted or complained against them. He would serve himself his own food, help with the housework, and defend women when men were being unfair.

But personally, I think I am agnostic. I think that means that I believe in live and let live. If God is so just and merciful, why send everyone to hell for what one woman did and why allow women to be oppressed by the ones who are supposed to love them?

Islam itself doesn't put down women. Thats culture mixing into religion. In Islam Men are better than Women in some aspects. But women are better than men in others. To use an analogy. Men are like a T-Shirt and Women are like the pants. You need both. Both are important. One is better in covering one area than another. And both help each other for a common goal.

Some people may beleive that a man created the world some may not. It might be true and it might not be. But I think this is 2006 not 001 B.C. It should be equal.
