Mandatory service is like Israel where every citizen (male and female (i think)) has to serve in the army for two years when they turn 18

No! As a soldier, I wanted to be surrounded by professionals and people who have a since of honor and duty to country, not a bunch of half-assed conscript schmucks. The majority of our forces want to be where they are at. The ones who don't like it, leave after four years and as an NCO, I'm glad to see them go because those ones have a tendency to make everybody else's lives miserable. The US military relies heavily on team spirit and esprit de corps. With draftees and conscripts, you don't get the same quality of soldiers, with the exception of the draft in WWII. Of course, patriotism was real back then. I have trained and conducted hundreds of joint missions with other countries conscripts and they are a joke.

No, I don't think a draft is a good idea: not everyone is cut out for military service, nor does everyone believe in or support the actions of the military.

If one was given the option of either the military or some kind of community service, then it becomes more palatable. But even then, there are significant problems. What about the kids who have to go to work right out of high school just so their family can make ends meet? The private sector likely offers better pay than either the military or social work. Forcing kids to use up two years of their life in low-paying, high-risk occupations could set those kids back a lot of money. And those wealthy, well-connected kids who get out of the draft anyway would have a two-year head start in the professional world.

Just some factors to chew on.

Switzerland does too. It is a good idea. It provides good national defense. What the Swiss do is have everyone serve and then everyone is in the reserve. That way if there is an emergency everyone is armed and is ready to go. They keep weapons, ammo and gasmasks in thier home and almost all homes have a bomb shelter. Good ideas. If there is a war though, we should take volunteers first then pick people from there if we need more. Volunteers have good moral to begin with and make a better army.

People who do not beleive in violence for religious reasons can be cooks or drivers or medic etc. Of course some people aren't cut out for military service so they can work in factories to produce munitions and such.

Also, I am a conservative (republican) and I support a draft AND Clinton went to Canada for a draft AND the National Guard does an important service. For example, they helped keep the peace in New Orleans after Katrina.

Also, Even though combat duty pay isn't very good you have to consider that while on active duty all of your supplies to do your job are provided free, your housing is free and your food is free. So when you consider how much a soldier makes add in how much the army spends taking care of their basic needs such as food, clothing and shelter.

Like Israel? To a certain point. I beleive they should have the choice to go through ROTC, come out and serve a minimum of 4 years after they graduate High School OR serve a minumum of 2 years after theyre out of High School and then go on with theyre life. This would probably eliminate the need for most future drafts in America.

Being in the Army i like it the way it is. If you have a draft or mandatory service you will get people that don't care about anything will steel lie cheat kill ect. Not that it is not like that now but its just on a smaller scale. If you force people to do things they don't want to do you get negative results.

No its not a good idea at all. People join the military because they want to. some people do have other plans for their lives, seeing as how we have a volunteer military, they can do those other things. if we had mandatory service i cant imagine how much money it would cost to pay everybody.

The Republicans are the party of the rich and the rich learned their lessons in Vietnam. They will never, ever, accept a situation which could cause their children to have to perform military service or go to war, unless they first volunteered for it.

Unless the republicans lose all their influence in washington, nothing resembling a draft will will ever, ever happen.

Sure, starting with Republican draft dodgers and no school deferments! You go in the military first, not the National guard! That should be made up of those who have completed their mandatory active service, not draft dodgers!

We don't need a draft.

A lot of countries, including Italy, have compulsory military service. I think this is a good idea, but I doubt it will happen any time soon.
