If Buddha really was a thin guy, why do the statues always show a big bellied, robust, jenny craig looking Buddha? Just curious thanks.

Actually Buddah is not the fat guy as seen in so many statues. The fat guy is Hotei, the Japanese God of happiness and contentment. The "real" Buddah statues that are seen throughout Buddhist countries are weight proportioned and the hands are in a resting medatative position, or in the teaching mudra with one arm up and the thumb and forefinger making a circle and the other hand resting in the lap.

I went on a USO tour once in Japan that had several old time statues and was more of a park where Japanese and tourist's of several nations visited. It had a huge statue of buddha that was about 2 or three stories high with a ladder curving up around the big fellow. You could climb up and look through his eyes, ears etc. Since then I have always believed him to be a big fat gob of lard but I don't really know where he was fat or thin.

That is not buddha. That's a different guy. The Buddha was Indian. Those statues are of the Chinese god of luck. When you see a little Indian guy in the lotus position, that is the buddha.

Someone else on this forum once said that the fat Buddha is supposed to represent him being full of the joy and wonder of life, something to that effect.

Not sure how accurate that is, though.

The fat Buddha is an oriental portrayal of Buddha. He was acutally from India. So I doubt he looked Asian and was fat like that.
But does appearance really matter?

Good question. When you see him fat it´s because he is depicting or wishing prosperity and wealth. But actually Budha was an ascetic man.
