Bits of Culture - Algeria

Cultural Values
* Small family units consist only of a husband and wife and their unmarried children. Upon marriage a young man who can afford to do so sets up a household for himself and his bride, and on the death of the head of an extended family, male members and their dependents break off into separate households.
* Marriage is traditionally a family rather than a personal affair and is intended to strengthen already existing families. An Islamic marriage is a civil contract rather than a sacrament, and consequently, representatives of the bride's interests negotiate a marriage agreement with representatives of the bridegroom. Although the future spouses must, by law, consent to the match, they usually take no part in the arrangements.
* A woman must obtain a father's approval to marry.
* Muslim women are prohibited from marrying non-Muslims though Muslim men may marry non-Muslim women.

BBC News: Country Profile: Algeria

Algeria, a gateway between Africa and Europe, has been battered by violence over the past half-century.

More than a million Algerians were killed in the fight for independence from France in 1962, and the country has recently emerged from a brutal internal conflict that followed scrapped elections in 1992.

History, language, customs, and an Islamic heritage make Algeria an integral part of the Maghrib and the larger Arab world, but the country also has a sizable Amazigh (Berber) population, with links to that cultural tradition.

Algeria

Nearly four times the size of Texas, Algeria is bordered on the west by Morocco and Western Sahara and on the east by Tunisia and Libya. The Mediterranean Sea is to the north, and to the south are Mauritania, Mali, and Niger. The Saharan region, which is 85% of the country, is almost completely uninhabited. The highest point is Mount Tahat in the Sahara, which rises 9,850 ft (3,000 m).

Algeria's culture is strongly influenced by the country's recent history, as well as other aspects such as their literature, music, arts and crafts and religion.

Arabic is Algeria's primary language of around 82% of the populace. The French colonialism left French as the second language of many educated Algerians, and English is very rarely spoken. Many people of Algeria also speak different dialects of Berber.

Algeria or Al-Jazar (its REAL name, just because people in the West have issues with pronouncing any name foriegn to them, they have to go and change it to make it seem ACCEPTABLE to them...pffft) is a neat country where Arabic, French and Berber is spoken. Most of the population is Muslim and u have practising Muslims or slack-offs. Even thought its an African country, the people there look like Pakistanis or Indians but with a bit of an Arab twist to it. If you dont speak Arabic, you can speak English or French and people will respond (try French before English tho). The men are really handsome like tall and strong features while the women are fair-skinned or really dark, depends which part you go to. The ethnic tribes there are Berber and they usually keep to themselves. BTW Al-Jazariyyan's sometimes have an attitude problem and if you insult something of theirs WATCH OUT!
