Definitely standing. I work at a pre-school and in my experience I've learned that its easier to teach them to stand than to re-teach them later. Start out telling your child "Its time to go potty" or "lets go potty" rather than asking him if he has to go because it will be a fun and exciting new experience at first then, as with everything else, the novelty wears off and the answer will always be no. Do not rely on pull-ups too much. They feel just like diapers. Rewards work great if you make sure to only reward him when he actually does something. Hope this helps.

I work with 2 year olds and have potty trained dozens. Put a drop or two of food coloring in the water so it doesn't mix too much. When the child pees, the colors move around. Very exciting.
Don't waste your money on pull-ups. Let your son pick out his own underwear at the store and make a big deal about it. Once you decide on no more diapers, make sure you stick with it. Don't give up! Good luck!

Try sitting first. That way he'll get to know that he does have to sit to poop. Hes still young, so dont get frustrated if he doesnt get it just yet. Once he can grasp the concept of having to sit to do both, then its time to get out the cheerios or fruit loops so you can teach him how to aim in the big potty. Best of luck to ya!

My older son we taught to stand up, not to sit down. He had his cheerios in the toilet and we made a game out of it- sink the ships. It was cheap and he liked to do it. Got real good at it too! Of course he sat for #2. He had to flush and wash his hands (a VITAL part of the whole training thing)
Now with my 2 year old- i bring him to the pot. i tell him its time to go and he sits there- sometimes he uses it, sometimes he doesnt. Either way i shovel praise on him for trying. He is also beginning to motion he needs to use the pot. i did not start training though until he SHOWED interest in the pot himself without me bringing it to him first. Oh yeah- he gets cheerios too!
i think the big thing that steers me away from training my boys to sit while they pee was when i was in college i met a man who sat on teh pot to pee. that totally grossed me out. when i asked him why he sat he said that was the way he was taught and he felt more comfortable sitting.

Sit for number 2, stand for number 1, sit when not sure.
Make sure he knows how to flush too. I've gone to public washrooms where adults don't even flush.
Please don't be one of the parents of those type of people.
Thanks in advance,
An occasional public toilet user.

I first taught my son to sit and pee, when he understood it all, he stood on his own terms.
