The best thing to do is clean his teeth. Plaque contains bacteria which irratates the gums making them red and swollen. A human toothbrush should work fine. Put the head of the brush against his teeth at about 45 degree angle and try to clean as many of the surfaces of his teeth as you can. I wouldnt advise using human toothpaste, just use water or a dog one from pet shops

Don't subject this dog to any possible discomfort from a dental condition that will only get worse. Spend a little money and bring it to a vet and have him checked out. I don't think it will run you broke--after all, why have a pet if you can't afford it???

Secondly, please don't give your dog unhealthy cheap food. You will only be asking for more and more trouble which will cost you money. While you are at the vet asking about his dental problems ask the vet what he would recommend or what he feeds the dogs he cares for.

I bet that mix is a cute and fun dog and I wish you many many happy years together.

You should take him to the vet annually to have his teeth cleaned. Its the only safe way. Plaque will build up regardless of what you feed the dog.

P.S. This procedure requires the vet to put your dog to sleep but its breath will be so much better and he'll get sick less too.

DIONE,
FIRST THE BEST THING TO DO IS TO TAKE THE DOG TO A VETERINARY TECHNICIAN TO DO SOME LOCALIZED SCALING FOR THOSE TEETH.
THE SECOND THING TO DO IS TO BRUSH YOUR DOG'S TEETH WITH A CANINE TOOTHPASTE W/O FLUORIDE.
THE THIRD THING TO DO IS ALTER THE DOG'S DIET. BISCUITS ARE JUST NOT NATURAL FOOD FOR DOGS TO EAT, DESPITE WHAT PEOPLE BELIEVE. A DOG'S CLOSEST RELATIVE IS THE WOLF. WHERE HE LIVES, THE WOLF CERTAINLY DOES NOT EAT BISCUITS. THEY EAT PLENTY OF RAW MEAT, RABBITS,SQUIRRELS, ETC.
DOGS DO NEED A NUTRITIOUS, BALANCED DIET, BUT IT MUST BE FOR DOGS -- NOT PEOPLE. ASK THE VET. WHAT'S THE APPROPRIATE FOOD.
CANS OF TUNA ARE A VERY NUTRITIOUS FOOD, BUT BISCUITS ARE NOT GOOD FOR YOUR FRIEND'S DOG.

You need to start brushing his teeth. There are special formulas of dog tooth paste on the market. Get his started by using your finger or a finger brush to get used to having his mouth invaded. Then graduate to using a toothbrush. Remember...BE GENTLE. I never thought my hyper dog would go for it but after a few tries, he relaxed and now doesn't seem to mind it.

Brush his teeth. The red is just normal. Give him more hard bones. Red meat only.
