if you need to get your password taken off your account in XP do the following
1 as the PC is booting press F8 a few times
2 boot in safe mode
3 log into the adminstrators account (should NOT have password by default)
4 go to control panel
5 open 'User accounts'
6 choose the account with the password
7 delete the passowrd on that account
8 restart the computer
and you should be able to log into your account without a passowrd
YOU DO NOT NEED TO FORMAT YOUR HARD DRIVE

Do not remove the system battery unless you totally know what you are doing!!!!!!! This could totally corrupt your computer system and you may never be able to use your computer again.
What you need to do is start your computer from safe mode... usually by holding the f8 button while your system is booting. Then you should be able to access the administrator account and change or remove your password or you can create a new user account.
In future from the user acccount screen you can create a password reset disk. You can find out more about this in windows' Help and Support Centre.

Im assuming you are talking about a desktop, and the battery on the motherboard.
It is possible that if you remove the battery and if it is not connected to a power source for x amount of time, the internal clock and the boot password will be forgotten.
But it is my understanding that this is not the case for newer computers. Is that what you were thinking of? Also from experiance this can take days.

Usually there's a jumper you can reset the bios with. Turn off power, move the jumper, wait 10 seconds, put jumper back.
This only works with older computers. New computers store the password in a small eeprom, and the only way to reset it is to send it to the factory and have them replace the eeprom. Probably easier to just buy a new motherboard.

That doesn't help with the Windows password, only with the BIOS password.
Removing the battery will make the BIOS forget what hardware is attached to the motherboard.

you also may have a jumper setting to reset the bios password. refer to your owners manual for the mother board. pulling the jumper off is the same as pulling the battery
