I own a 98 jetta with a 2.0 engine, I have no problems with the way it runs, the 2.0 engine is rock solid, it does not have a timing belt, which frequently goes bad on most 4 cyl. cars...That being said, be careful of the power windows, power sunroof, and air conditioner, as I have had issues with these areas. Make sure ALL accessories work AS THEY SHOULD, these cars are prone to electrical malfunctions. My car has 110,000 miles.

hsueh010 is right -- def. transmissions. if you test drive it and it pauses a bit longer before shifting after you move the shift lever, then ya, it's a no-go.
volvos and toyotas are built to last. if they're taken care of. i've seen cars of either make beyond 250,000 miles still running pretty well.

for the cost the broker paid for the areas & exertions, they might've dropped a sparkling crate engine in for much less! ok... first, carry it back to the broker and tell them what's happening. the priority continues to be of their nook. in any different case, it appears like something straightforward like a vacuum hose isn't tight or an electric connector isn't related.
