Waterbeds offer no support, they tend to be worse for that reason. They can create or worsen back problems.

A waveless waterbed has baffles in it that keep the thing from sloshing wildly when you get into it. Personally I always thought the waves were fun. But neither of these provides support along the full length of your body, so the heavier parts of you (always the hips, especially in females) will sink. As a side sleeper with a bad back, that gave me a V shape with my hips twisted at an angle and my legs sticking up. It was comfortable till it started to hurt, which only took a quarter to a half an hour. I ended up hunched forward, walking in pain all the time. Spring mattresses are too hard unless you get a three-inch foam topper. Foam mattresses have to be exactly the right firmness to give way under the hips while not giving way under the chest, and even if you strike gold in getting the right choice, the mattress will conform to your imprint after just a couple of years. A friend of mine bought himself the premiere, name-brand memory foam mattress but told me it broke down after just a year and was letting the heavier parts sink while still supporting the knees and keeping them high. He said he was miserable. The only kind of mattress I've been happy with was an air mattress with a tufted surface (and a foam topper on it makes it luxurious). Every part of me was supported and because of the tufted surface the hips and shoulders were allowed to make dents in the top without losing support and turning me into a V. Equalized pressure the entire length of my body. I recommended an air mattress to my friend (he of the memory foam fiasco) who bought himself an air topper for the new, rock-hard bed he had already bought (and regretted buying). He bought one and finally managed to get a comfortable night's sleep. Now he recommends air mattresses to all his friends. Select Comfort is the premiere brand in air mattresses and they have a lot of options, but I couldn't afford the rather hefty price tag so I made do with the AeroBed knock-off, which is heavenly. Goodness only knows what the Select Comfort is like.

If you have never heard anything bad, you haven't talked to many people about it. Try a sleep number bed. You can adjust the firmness, get the support you need, and change it as your body changes. If you want the warmth of a heated waterbed, try a heated matress pad. Sleep well.

Get a sleep number bed. Select comfort. Water beds are so.....1980. They can actually make your back worse. And leak, motions sickness (not kidding).
