i think livetall is a guy...as a girl, honestly...i wouldn't want something so generic, and i don't think any of my girlfriends would either.
pay attention to the girl and what she likes, what her hobbies are. all she cares is that there was thought behind it. does she like to write? maybe a nice journal and a fancy pen. does she like photography? find a beautiful photo she took and have it framed. perhaps she mentioned her favorite perfume at one point...that's always a good one. but seriously, one of those pre-packaged deals from bath and body works (or anyplace) screams, "i had no idea what to get you!"
ETA: No giftcards either!! Unless it's for something like a massage, manicure, pedicure...but a giftcard someplace like Target or Borders is a big fat NO! Bor-ing.

keep it simple and basic - you can go to bath & body works & pick up a gift basket of lotions & creams.
