Not all of it is bad, it really just depends on the message it conveys. Is the music saying to go out and act crazy and worship Satan, or what? That's the thing, you just have to use discernment. We live in a world that is filled with secularism, therefore, we must make due with the world we live in and use our heads.

I agree that hip-hop is worse.
Many rap artist "rap" about drugs, gangs, and degration towards women.
Though some can be inspirational at times, just as how rock music can be all blood, guts and Teh Dark Lord.
Many Christians object to metal, especially Black/Death types because of the anti-Christian sentiment.
Though some have decided to go further and extend it to all forms of rock, just by a few examples.
Some also claim that it creates "violent moods" with the tones.
Yeah... like the organ music at my families church makes me feel any cherrier.

I think it is more the rock culture. It is the counter-culture movement. Counter to what? Religion pretty much. Many signs and symbols are all Satanic in meaning and origin. Satan has been desensitizing people to rock ever since Elvis. His music seems so harmless nowdays. Think about how many different groups dedicate albums to lucifer, one that comes to mind: Red Hot Chili Peppers. I know there are others, but that is just one. Also System of a Down has the verse in the Bible where Jesus was on the cross in the song chop suey. I like the sound of a lot of rock, but there is so much satanic influence in the songs. It is tough to find a rock group that doesn't curse. Since music has such a strong influence on us, we should be careful about what we listen to, just like what we watch. Satan was the leader of the heavenly choir, so he knows a lot about music and the influence of it. My pastor's friend actually became possesed by listening to violent music. He was exorcised and then afterwards went to destroy his cd collection. He cut all of his cd's up and threw them away. He went down the hall to someone else's room for a minute and came back to find all of his cd's back on the shelf in perfect condition. They had been put back together! My friend also had supernatural events happen concerning his music, like music playing through his headphones when they were disconnected from the cd player. I try to listen to Christian music all the time. It is such a good feeling to know all you are pumping into your brain, are songs that lift up God. That should be our greatest joy. If that doesn't interest you, you should probably ask "why not?". Your tastes probably will change if you choose to listen to music that honors God. I'll leave you with this verse.
Finally, brothers, whatever things are true, whatever things are honorable, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report; if there is any virtue, and if there is any praise, think about these things.

It was once considered evil to eat potatoes. The lighting rod was originally condemned by the church. When rock was new, some considered it evil and the notion lingers on. For some reason, fundamental religion tends to thing change is sinful.

It isn't, and the notion that it is died in the late 1950's. Rock music is now played at the Super Bowl. Rock music is mainstream. People say it is evil because they fear what they do not understand, and they do not understand rock music. Superstition should be outlawed - it leads to crazy notions like this one.

Ah, this is rather easy. Remember it is not the things that go into man that are evil but the things that they as and do. Is it inherently evil? Not necessarily, though some of it is scandalously salacious.

I read an article on how music itself was only recently separated into secular and religious categories. Music is music, there should be no distinction.

If music made us do anything we would all love each other. There are more love songs than any other kind.
