The Irish pound or punt was part of the national culture and history - I understand the switch over in 2002 was fairly smooth - did no one resent becoming a small part of the larger EU?

I'm Irish aswel and im not resentful at all.I dont see money as a major thing that defines a culture. Of course the Irish punt was unique to Ireland but I'd never for the second think of its loss as making me any less Irish!!
It made economic sense to join the euro as it has eliminated the problem of exchange rates within most of Europe.
I think if you think that way, then you would also believe that joining the EU in the first place was a mistake cause Ireland lost some independence. But this kind of thinking I believe isn't practical in the real world.We benefit so much from the EU that not joining would have been like shooting ourselves in the foot in order to remain as "Irish" as possible!
Such economic matters like a common currency don't take anything away from being Irish it has benefitted the economy a lot so in a way it was about being Irish....we're clever enough not to let such a great opportunity slip by!!
To be honest its just a pain in the *** that England retained the sterling as the exchange rate is a rip off!!It doesnt boost their economy it just makes trade unneccesarily more complex!
So in a nutshell I'm definatly not resentful....it was just a case of moving with the times.

nope-I prefer the euro. I went to europe last year and it was so much easier without having to worry about getting cash exchanged and then wondering if you were being ripped off. Ireland has changed considerably over the past 10+ years-I think getting a new currency was another step forward to being a successful modern country. We may be a small part of Europe but we're just as important as the rest of the continent :D

as part of the other half of Ireland, even though i am English, but a bit of Irish, be Jesus, Liverpool is the capital of Ireland. i would be p issed off,,, who wants to become euro,, Britain rules OK you politicians,,
