I personally love the Empire State Bldg, and it overlooks the Times Square area. one year I went up there, hung out til closing (11:30), and then joined the mob at the Square. The advantage of arriving at the square late is that you're on the exterior; your're not hemmed it - so you can be among the first to get out and get to a downtown bar.
