Some take only ten lessons then pass the test. I booked 20 and passed back in 1998 and even then i still didnt consider myself competent for at least a year or two due to the huge amount of situations you will have to react to on the road (you will be learning all your life).
Dont skimp on the lessons. The more you have, the more you will learn and will be better equipped to react to what happens on the road. You must also make sure you have enough lessons to ensure you can read the road correctly and anticipate other road users reactions. I have avoided numerous crashes due to reacting before something happens (defensive driving!). I only learned that though the wisdom of my tutor during later lessons and it has saved my life many a time i reckon e.g recognising someone who is going to run a red light at a junction. So many people just plonk themselves behind the wheel of a car with no regard for anyone else, blindly doddering up the road with no thought about what is going on around them.
You can see how many people die on the roads every day usually through peoples inability to control their vehicle or react to a situation. Remember - the car can be a dangerous weapon. give it half a chance and it will kill you.
Learn how to drive properly and you will have a lifetime of safe and enjoyable motoring.

For me it was:
6 lessons for motorcycle test
8 lessons for car test
5 lessons for HGV test
Each lesson was one hour, and I passed all the driving tests first time.
Personally, I believe that anyone should be able to pass a car test with a maximum of 20 one-hour lessons. Any more than that, and your instructor is simply trying to get extra money out of you (or maybe they're just not a very good instructor...).

I had 5 lessons (5 hours) and passed first try, and that was down to natural talent and common sense, because I'm not the lucky type. Hey Dan O, not a driving instructor by any chance are You?

No set number.
Different strokes for different folks.
Just drive at every opportunity.
It's all about muscle memory and observation.
Good luck!

My (BSM) driving insructor told me the average was 1.5 lessons for every year of your life. It worked for me (guess I'm average!)

Recommended - at least 40.
It depends on how quick you learn......I'd say about 30 for most people.
