Do you know how many Christian were murdered or thrown into slavery just because they were Christian? There was a time when Rome had nothing but contempt for believers. Bigotry is bad no mater what faith you practice. Christians especially have a calling to love our fellows. Most of the hatred held in America is in the hands of people who hate God, at least the peoples that brought His physical body into the world. How can a true Christian hold that kind of hate.. No Christians don't get involved in harsh treatment of anyone. But being sinners we do error.... Jim

Good question! First of all, the Bible never teaches slavery based upon discrimination or skin colour. there is nothing in the Bible to suggest that certian ethnicities are inferior to others and they are more suited to slavery: quite the contrary in fact! The Bible says "For ye are all the children of God...There is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus" (Gal 3:26-28). Christ do not recognize the superiority of one kind of people over another.
However, the Old testament in particular does discuss the proper treatment of bonded people, or essentially slaves. I think it is important to realize the historical context. Six thousand years ago, slavery was common; the Bible discussed slavery in order to protect the dignity of slaves and ensure they were treated properly. It never says slavery is ok, but it wants to ensure that since there was a slavery epidemic at the time, that those in bonds were not mistreated. Also, in Biblecal times, people were not enslaved because of their skin colour, so slavery was less the racial issue it became in the 19th century.

In the New Test, even Jesus tells the slaves to be content with where they are and what they have.
Slavery was ok in the US till about the 40's (Sorry folks, the Civil War did NOT end slavery... it tried... but it didn't do it. Slaves were still owned... and not all were black. Many were Natives and Whites) *Amazes me that people don't even know their OWN nations history!*
In other countries, where many Christian ministries are trying to convert the "locals"... slavery is still ok there, even with the Christians.......

First of all why mention blacks? Just curious.
The treatment of African Americans today is a shame and unfortunately has a long history. Many in the north died b/c they felt it was wrong.
Christianity today is only a word. There are so many denominations that you need to be more specific. Moreover there was slavery in the Bible. So again you need to be more specific, indentured servant, you owed someone something so you were in slaved to them.
In this country I wouldn't be surprised to see slavery reenacted in the years to come. There will always be some type of racial division.
Sad though

No, Christanity doesn't say slavery is ok. The people who treated blacks like slaves were most likely not Christians. Blacks shouldn't have been treated they way they were, but Christians certainly don't promote it. Christians believe everyone should be treated equal.

No it does not say slavery is OK. It says that if you have slaves treat them kindly and for slaves to obey their masters.
It does not condone slavery. People twisted that to make it OK. People owned slaves then and they wanted to owners and slaves to get along. In the old testament it talks of granting freedom to slaves every 7 years and forgiving debt.
Southern slave owners made up all kinds of things making them feel better about themselves but I doubt that truly spiritual people had slaves. I know my ancestor who owned slaves had an epiphany and granted them freedom and one left and came back as the white northerners wouldn't hire him and what not. But the point is after finding the Lord He came to realize he was wrong. It is sooo wrong to take any ones right to choose for themselves away. Except to keep people safe from criminals who would do violence or steal for greed ect..

Slavery under Roman rule was the norm, the comments about slaves obeying their masters in Paul's writings are typical of the times.

The bible would call what happened to black folks in American History, "Man stealing". It is considered a sin. The slavery spoken of in the bible was more like bondservanthood to resolve debt issues...the servant was always released after 7 years and they had rights...you couldn't beat them and so forth. They were there by choice to pay off the debt...kind of like if you eat a meal and had forgotten your wallet and so you do the dishes. You are not a slave, but a temporary servant. What happened to black foks is clearly not that kind of slavery. They were kidnapped, beaten, subjected to harshe treatment, disease, cultural sterilization, had their very names taken from them. That would be man stealing and was a punishable crime in the OT.

The definition of slavery is colored with images of abuse. If a servant was mistreated by an owner in ancient times, the owner could be incarcerated or worse.
Some 'slaves' were voluntary indentured to pay their debts, for example.

Slavery as we understand it is obviously a horrific and unGodly act. Slavery in biblical times however was completely different than it was in the time that we are more familiar with. What was refered to as a slave is more like what we would se as a term0-contracted laborer, who actually got ette treatment and wages than hired day-laborers.
