Unfortunately, heartworms are deadly serious. Your vet would have to determine the severity of infestation as to medical treatment. I am assuming you had your dog tested and it was positive for HW. There are different levels of positive. As the dog is barely infected or it has been infected for long time and has done organ damage. Can be long slow death. And was preventable.
Yes, treatment is expensive. Takes months to complete-depending on severity. Dog must be kept quiet and calm as the heartworms are being killed as they could cause heart congestion/heart failure. If the test is high positive then you would want his opinion on prognosis/damage to organs from treatment, if dog has decent chance of survival. The injections are actually a poison to kill the heartworms. Residual damage can occur to liver, pancreas, etc. Very touch and go.
If barely infected and otherwise healthy I'd go for the treatment if you can. Yes, there can be a bottom line of affording the treatment. Some vets are more $$$hungry than others. Some might take payments and work with you. All dogs should be tested when young and started on HW prevention, year around.
Short haired dogs are at higher risk as mosquitoes can bite them easier. HW is caused/spread by mosquitoes.
If situation is already too serious or if no way you can get a vet to work with you then I am so sorry for the dog. It is deadly so you would need to do right by the dog. Please don't let this happen ever again.

No email, I can't tell, what a Vet showed/told me, too many people confused to always think Vet. Pay the money like everyone do and GO to the Vet. That the only answer you get here.
You could try the Heart-guard, but, most times when you find out the Heart-worms are bad and you risk dislodging them to quickly with Heart-guard or similar and can Block the Heart and Kill the dog.

You take your dog to the veterinarian and he will give you some meds to get rid of it. then you do as the vet says and the heart worms should be gone soon, if u don't do sum thing fast the worms could eat thru the dogs heart and kill him.

You can buy over the counter preventatives for heart worm, but if you suspect your pet has them you need to take it to the vet immediately. Only your vet can give you a proper heart worm treatment for your pet.

heartguard works... my dog thinks it is an extra treat. when i first got my dog, she was found on the side of the road, not even a month old, bloated, hungry, and lost, she had been eating trash, and somehow she got heart worms, and then she got better after heartguard. it works! i hope it works for you as well!!! good luck!!!

You need to ask your vet. You cannot do this yourself. And brace for the $500 bill.

If you caught them early enough, your pet may be able to have treatments. (Almost like doggie chemo) It is very expensive.
