1. Dobies
2. Danes
3. Bull Mastiff
4. South African Boerboel
5. Akita or Chow Chow

The first 2 were specifically bred to be guard dogs and are very intelligent and trainable. A good guard dog can be trained to attack on command and will stop attacking on command. Bull Mastiffs for their size and intimidation factor as well as the Boerboel. Chow chows and Akitas are both great guard dogs, but I ranked them lower because they tend to be a more one person kind of dog and sometimes have problems with larger families or people who like to entertain a lot.

A lot of people have told you pit bulls would make a good guard dog but this is totally NOT true. They are entirely too friendly with humans to make a decent guard dog..unless you'd like the intruder to be smothered in doggie kisses. Most resources I've gone to on pit bulls say that they make sucky guard dogs.

Well in my opinion....my great dane is the greatest gaurd dog. She can stare you down and make you feel like you are about to be lunch. She stands like a statue and her bark is so deep and loud....it is very intimidating.

BUT....it's all an illusion....she the sweetest most gentle giant you will ever meet. Although if I were a stranger...i don't think i would risk crossing her boundries....she can be very convicing.

But the only other 3 dogs that intimidate me are

1)Rottweilers (Lucifer Dog)
2)Doberman Pinchers
3)German Shepards

German Shepard
Rottweiler(spelling???)
Pit Bull
Doberman

Sorry I'm at a loss for a fifth. I picked them because I have personally owned or had regular contact with at least one of the first three breeds and I can tell you I was always at ease when they were with me or in my home. I knew if anyone ever tried to hurt me they would have to go through that dog first. Females are better because tend to be more aggressive toward outsiders due to the maternal instinct. Dobermans are just scary looking. I have no personal experience with them.

You should hear my Bloodhound when she sees someone/something she doesn't think belongs near the house. That noise could raise the dead. People assume she's dangerous because she is enormous. She adores people, but I have no doubt in my mind that she would help me if I needed it, as she does with my other dog. Loyalty often counts for a lot more than pure aggression when you need a dog to defend you.

No dog would be a good guard unless poison - proofing has been part of the training. You leave, I toss tainted meat over to "guard" dog, take your valuables and the dog carcass with me, you shake and scratch your head like a moron and wonder what happened.
That is reality and none of you have probably ever thought about it.

1. German Shepard: Easily trained, very smart and loyal. Pretty intimidating, and good with children.
2. Doberman Pinscher: Also easily trainable, smart, very intiidating, can be good with children.
3. Rotweiler: Can be trained, smart, big and intimidating, and good with children.
4. Pit Bull: Very intimidating and can usually be trained.
5. Chihuahua: Very vocal (will let you know when someone is there). Not friendly to strangers at all.
