I served 8 years in the Army and I had many soldiers who regretted their MOS (occupations), the physical training, missions, deployments...I don't know what mess we would have if there was a draft. They all raised their right hands though.

I dont think it is necessary at this point yet. It would require a very/ Super strong sentiment from American population about patriotism to bring back the draft ( such Iran send a nuke bomb over US, destroy NC or some places). At this moment , there are still many American agiasnt this war, do you think they would agree for the draft?
Bring back the draft or not can't be simply decided by the Congress or government. It require a mass popular support.

Just don't call it a draft, call it national service and as you say, no derferments, everyone should have to do it, especially the wealthy who have always gotten out of the military. It would do young Americans good.

A little thing I like to call "Freedom". Forcing somebody to participate in the military is just as bad as forcing them to participate in Social Security, nationalized health care, or picking cotton on your farm. Slavery is still slavery, even if you give it a prettier name.
Should everyone serve their country? Yes.
Especially the rich snobs? Yes.
Should everyone help the needy (poor, old, disable, etc.)? Yes.
Should these things be forced upon us under threat of incarceration? Hell NO!
Either we are the "land of the free", or we aren't.
I don't doubt most people's good intentions. But as the saying goes: "The road to Hell is paved with good intentions". We all need to remember that our country was founded on the principle of freedom.

Am I wrong in thinking the only countries that require military service are not democratic governments?
I thought only dictatorships and ruling parties like that forced military service.
Please let me know if I'm wrong - it's happened once or twice :)

in countries like Germany or Korea, all citizens must spend 2 years in public service such as police or military. if they are in the military only volunteers or people over 2 years are allowed deployed.

You are wrong. Many European countries have compulsory military service, including Sweden and Switzerland, two of the most famous Neutral countries.

because then rich people would have to send thier children to the army. some wealthy people do make the choice to serve their country, but the VAST majority of those sent to die are poor, and usually those wealthy people either have a LONG history of being a military family or do it against their parent's wishes
