I was thinking of joining the military once I graduated college and becoming military police. I was told by several people that having that on your resume when looking for a police job can boost you past many other qualified candiates. If you are a military cop do you serve in war and travel like regular infantry? Any information on mp's would be great. Thanks in advance!

Well, if you've graduated college you would probably not want to enlist to become a MP, you would be working below your skill level and education, and without ROTC or a service academy you would not be able to become an officer directly, which you are qualified for with a college degree. There are officers within the MP corp, but again, you can't just walk right in to those positions. But actually, I've heard that while police departments are certainly open to former MP's they actually prefer a fresh person so they can train them without the past hang-ups that you would bring with military experience. Yes, they definately go to war and MP company's are as hard-core as any combat specialty, it's not like Adam 12, just so you know.

I can answer this, I'm currently a Navy MA (Master-at-Arm) or the Navy version of MP. Yes the training, and experience is good for civilian police, but not the same. MP's are trained in military law enforcement, as well as force protection, and anti-terrorism. Currently the Navy is deploying it's security forces to different area's that are more combat related. So if you do become an MP you will probably be deployed.

My husband is an MP in the Marines. Towards the end of MP training they listed where they wanted to go and what kind of MP they wanted to be. In the Marine Corp there are many different types. There are base cops, the ones that guard the President (can't think of their names) and field mp's, and there might be even more than that. Anyways, my husband chose field MP. He is currently on his 2nd deployment in the past 4 years. He has some friends that have gone base mp and have still not deployed. As far as the getting a job after, he was told by people that it makes it harder to get a job afterwards if you were an MP but none have his friends have had any problems getting law enforcement jobs afterwards.

Well, i tried to get in before someone came back with an idiotic response... too late.

Yes, being military police will help you on a civilian police application... it's job experience! Security Forces (the new and Official name for military cops) deploy as much as (if not more than) most other career fields. Also, due to recent developements, security forces are often on convoy protection duty rather than just guarding bases. In short, chances are that you will be deployed to forward locations and probably will end up going off base over there... there's a chance you might get shot at (which is VERY different from coming under disciplined enemy fire). However, a beat cop has the chance of getting shot at as well... so that's something to consider if you're too worried about it.

I can tell you amount the Navy, they don't have MP but they have MAs (master at arms). Some of them are at Gitmo, others are on ships, some are stationed here in the states too.

But yes, where ever there is military there will be a branch of their police force.
