What kind of dog is Scooby Supposed to be?
I know I've been asking this cartoon breeds but I'm bored and I've had this debate with my husband in the past and he says it's supposed to be a Great Dane but I don't think it looks like one.

wow. He's an ugly one though. Sorry for you Scooby Doo fans. I've NEVER like that cartoon.

David O. Notice how I said I've NEVER liked that cartoon. A Smart Person would assume that I've never watched it. We actually bought our dogs "Scooby Snacks" and that's how the debate came to be. I wish my husband was around enough for us to just be able to sit around and watch cartoons. (He is in the military-USMC)

It was suggested that they try drawing a dog and ultimately decided to model him after a large canine breed-the Great Dane. When the team discovered there was a woman working in the Hanna-Barbera painting department who actually bred prize-winning Great Danes, she was consulted about the characteristics of the breed…and then the crew went in the opposite direction to create Scooby-Doo!"

Yes, he is supposed to be a Great Dane.
Marmaduke is a Great Dane, too, but was based on the antics of the cartoonist's aunt's Boxer. He just decided it would be funnier for the dog to be BIG, so went with the Great Dane. As a Boxer owner who has spent a lot of time around Great Danes, I have never seen a Dane act as silly as a Boxer - or any other breed, for that matter. I wish he would have kept him as a Boxer.
