No one ever looks at the stamps in my passport. Who could ever need the information? Specifically, when I come home to the US, who cares that I have arrived on a certain day?

An average, good, non-criminal person wouldn't care at all about stamps in their passport. A traveler would, since it will also contain visa's to enter other countries, and also tell you how long the country will permit you to stay. Some people actually collect the stamps found in passports to show how many places they've been.

For the government, its an entirely different story. Every passport is put under a scanner at every immigration port around the world, checking for fakes, criminals, or illegals.

It's like a paper trail of sorts. A record. And besides, this is the U.S., afterall. We can't just ignore who enters and leaves the country. I'm not paranoid or anything, but if we are careless, something like 9/11 would happen again.

Perhaps the next time your passport is stamped, you should ask the person why they do it.

The US only lets visitors stay for 90 days. They need the date stamp to see if you stayed longer than 90 days. They also want to see if you are trying to circumvent the system by staying 90 days, leaving for a day then returning for another 90 days. It would be really easy to do this by driving across the Canadian border every three months...if your passport wasn't stamped every time.

Some countries only let you stay for a number of days. This gives them a record of the dates.
