My cat is normally very well behaved - he turns into a demon whenever I try to trim his claws. I have tried holding him in my lap, I have tried holding him on the table with one arm keeping his head from seeing what I'm doing to his claws...none of it works. He hisses and growls and bites no matter what I try.

I would hate to have to take him to a groomer for this, but it is such a trial for me to do it and he is usually very well behaved when the vet does it. I'm assuming he would behave for the groomer as well (as it is a stranger also).

Any tips?

first, get a really good pair of guillotine clippers. The wait til kitty is sleepy and then wrap kitty in a bathtowel. Talk nicely to kitty the whole time. Rest him on your lap and pull out one paw, squeeze pads and clip just before the quick (where the nail turns pink). If you accidentally clip the quick, it will bleed...you may want to pick up styptic powder when you get your clippers. It stops all bleeding immediately...but just cut a little at first. Maybe only one paw a night or maybe all at once...you need to gauge what kitty can handle.

Cats are suckers for tasty treats... help take the fairly some trauma (drama?) out of nail trims by using lavishly praising your cat and giving him his in demand treats afterwards whether he's wrapped up in a towel like a burrito or fidgeting on your lap. Calm or sleepy cats do make the terrific clientele for a rapid trim, and whether you basically get a pair claws clipped in the previous the cat gets aggravating, make specific to grant him a brilliant number of treats afterwards. you're conditioning him to having his gentle paws held and exhibiting him you will possibly be depended directly to be delicate. as quickly as your cat acquaintances nail trims (undesirable) with scrumptious treats and compliment (good), he will at last warfare much less, understanding that there is a reward coming. wait and spot, consistent, and beneficiant with the treats! P.S.: be sure you employ a pair of cat nail trimmers you experience tender with... there are a number of types, so discover one which you will carry directly to and use effectively while your lap is done of massive squirmy cat.

this can be a problem - I got my cat use to me touching her nails when she was a kitten. But since you can't go back in time... you might have to wrap your kitty in a towel (over his head) so he can't see what you are doing. It would work best if you have someone that can hold the cat for you while you clip - talk softly to the cat while you clip

- hold the cats paw firmly between your thumb and index (pointer) finger and squeeze each toe so the nail comes out and clip each nail this way (not too short). Have backing soda handy to put the paw in in case you clip too short and it bleeds.

When all the cutting is done, give the cat a special treat that you save only for nail clippings (a bit of real tuna maybe).

I found my cats didn't act like I was stick bamboo under their nails if I used a nail file. I just tell them they are getting a pedicure. For some reason they don't seem to mind having the nails filed. Clipping is truly a two person job and even then it's not an easy job.

There are kitty straight jackets for this, they are around 20-30 dollars, but it will last forever. Also, make sure to try to make it as pleasant as possible for the cat so he doesn't look at nail trimming as a bad thing. If you have any other questions about this feel free to e-mail me.

One of my cats does the exact same thing. I found that wrapping his head in a towel will make him stop the biting. I think he overacts because he can see what I'm doing, but when he can't see, he remains cool on my lap as I clip his claws.

Trimming the cat's nails should be a 2 person job (if your cat is afraid). At first my cat wiggles when my bf and I starts trimming his nalis. What I do is I held him to sit on my lap...and start saying "good boy, good boy"...just try to talk to your cat...it listens and will get distracted. Also, try covering or blocking the cat's eyes from looking at its paws....it'll calm the cat down. Then my bf will start trimming my cat's nails....and I will continue talking to my cat. It works...but remember don't trim too much...it may bleed.

Try using a nail file just to dull them down a bit, or get the cat declawed. I have had a cat for years and never heard of trimming the nails.

I know you may not want to take him to the groomers but you
should if you are having trouble doing it yourself . Go to the vet. They usually do it cheaper than the groomers.

Wow, I wouldn't attempt this with my cat unless I had a blood donor lined up! It's not worth the risk of serious bodily injury - not to mention a seriously pissed puss - to do this myself, I let the groomers do it!
