how do I prevent my cat from following me all day and only eating when I pet his fur. I have tried to ignore him gradually every week but by the time I stop touching him he completely stops eating losing alot of weight and starts to moan and scatch in the hallway. I have also noticed that he is licking off his fur when I dont give him constant attention. He is also jealous of my son. When I talk to or give my son a hug he stares and starts to circle my legs.

First things first, I'm afraid. There's no way to diagnose either a physical or a behavioral problem via internet. If you haven't done so already, I'd advise a visit to your veterinarian to first see that there isn't any physical issue, and then (probably) to a veterinary behaviorist.

An accurate diagnosis is necessary to determine the course of action.

Does your local shelter not have any cats up for adoption? Your breeder will keep that animal until a buyer is found, your local shelter may put down a cat or kitten after a certain time has elapsed. There are far more animals up for adoption than homes to take them, why buy an animal in those circumstances.

If you could keep your cat inside while you are gone that may work. Also maybe try to get your son to pet the cat more and you pet it less over a long period of time.

It sounds like you have a cat that wants to stay a baby. Kittens are used to being groomed by their mothers while they nurse. Some adult cats still want to be loved while they eat. It isn't very common, but I have one like that here. It's like Mommy praising a kid for cleaning his plate.

I don't thing he is jealous of your son. He sees that there is affection going on, and he wants to be a part of it. I know that when you hug your son, you want to focus on him, and that is fine. Just don't be afraid that the cat is jealous. It is just trying to be a part of the family. If he didn't like your son, he wouldn't stay around him at all.

He may be depressed, cats can be very jealous. If he is depressed there are meds they you can give him. This sounds very serious, take he to a vet asap!
