My female dog (ok ... *****, such a horrible word) is 18 months old. She is (was) due for a season & noticed late last week or Saturday her nipples were looking prominent. On Monday the first spots of blood were evident so we declared her officially in season and stopped contact with all other dogs. My worry is on Sunday she was off the lead over the park - she disappeared with a couple of other loose dogs momentarily then went charging off to the other end of the park at lightning speed to get away from them. Could one of these dogs have 'done the dirty deed' with her? She clearly is in season now but there is a lot less blood with this season than there have been with the previous 2 but she may have just got better at cleaning herself up. Can I ask owners of girl dogs/breeders, does this usually happen? Is there a chance she's going to be pregnant?
Not really interested in answers from people who have strong opinions on whether or not I should breed my dog, thanks.

After 9 answers, I thank the people who have actually read the question for your answers. I am amazed that so many jump to conclusions without reading what I have said! Please ..... no more answers telling me how irresponsible I am for letting a b*tch in season off the lead, as far as I was aware at the time she was NOT in season at the time. BTW I live in England, not really interested in American laws.

It is possible because it happens pretty quick, but it is not likely if it was really just a moment. Dogs that have not bred before usually are not great at it from the get go- it takes a minute to get things right, if your dog was running away and they were not unsupervised for mare than a few seconds, I would not worry about it. I have read that dogs penises actually swell and it takes time for the swelling to go down after ejaculation, forcing the dogs to be locked together for a little bit. Chances are since it is her 3rd time, she is just getting better at taking care of herself. Good luck.

And apparently all of the know it alls can not read clearly enough to see that you were unsure if she was starting on Sat. and MONDAY (the day after Sunday) she was in full blown heat. I would say that you were unaware that she was in heat on Sunday- so ignore all the rude people who don't read.

I think it would depend how long she was away from you. Unlike the human male, dogs take time to mate! They also lock together during sex and can stay that way for some length of time! It sounds to me like she wasn't ready to mate which is why she ran away from them too. The chances of her getting caught are pretty slim as she was only just coming into season! Even a full organised mating doesn't always produce a pregnancy!
Best advice just keep an eye on her, if you think she is pregnant take her to the Vet for him to confirm it. She could also have a phantom pregnancy anyway as they often do.

Theres a remote possibility but usually dogs tie together for half an hour or so, and you would have noticed if she were missing that long.
She may have been flirting with the males.
Best thing to do is ring your vet and see if she needs the contraceptive jab.

I'm guessing from your Q that she ran off before you thought she was in season, right?:)

was the blood red or brown if it was more brown then she has only just started her season and there isnt much of a chance that she would have caught..usually its day 11 --13 that is the optimum time and the blood goes from being red to pinky thats when she could fall pregnant occasionally its earlier but not the first day or so i think you can say she wouldnt get caught...but if you are worried or feel she might have been in earlier go to the vet he can give her an injection to stop the pregnancy.....the dogs probably smelt that she was coming into season and thats why they paid so much attention ....and if she was ready to mate she would not run from them she would be flirting with them....

If your dog is in season, and got away from you, yes, there is a distinct possibility that she mated with one of the "rogue dogs".

If she's pregnant, her pregnancy will start to show about 30-40 days after the mating. Her nipples will elongate; her belly will swell; and she may have the doggie version of morning sickness (spontaeously vomitting).

To keep anything like this from happening in the future, keep your dog inside as much as possible during her heats, and keep her on a leash whenever you take her outside. Remember, the males can smell her scent for up to a mile away. You don't want every beast in the neighborhood coming after your girl.

well a ***** will normally only accept a male dog when she's about 2weeks into the season from the 11th-13th day,so i suspect these dogs were proberly trying it on but she ran away because she's not ready.my bitches last season seemed less messy then the previous 2 aswell, maybe it is that with expeirience they manage better. The best bet now is to keep her away from other dogs now and 4-6weeks after her season maybe take her to the vets just for a check up.Good luck

As I understand it they aren't really fertile until the 2nd 7 days of their cycle, however, why was your dog off lead when you know she's in heat? She should either be in a kennell or inside the house away from any other dogs until her heat is completely finished.

If you aren't interested in other people's opinions, you shouldn't post on a public board where it is as much our right to have an opinion as it is yours to post your question.

It was very irresponsible of you to have your b*tch off lead in a public park. If she's pregnant now by a breed other than hers, she will no longer be viable for breeding 'pure breds'.

Seems to me, however, that due to your lack of responsibility that your animal is just another victim of back yard breeding. Honest breeders know the precautions that must be taken to protect their b*tches.

I love how you said you declared her in seas and stopped contact with all other dogs - except you took her that weekend to an off leash dog park. Oxymoron?

Females in season should be kept crated or in an enclosed run, not allowed to run loose!
And anyway unless you intend to breed to a purebred dog, you should have her neutered. Far too many unwanted pups in this world! You're the intelligent species here, it's up to You to be responsible and keep her confined; she's just following her instincts. Letting her offlead in public when you know she's in season is just asking for an unwanted pregnancy.

Geezus lady...why the heck would you take your dog that's in heat to a dog park and then let her off leash. I'm not saying this just because of the pregnancy issue. It could start fights between other dogs as well.
