My 11 month old Aussie is hyperactive always looking for something to do, tears her toys apart follows me everywhere I go always wants to either play or be picked up and totally torments my 4 year old Border Collie who just wants to relax,. the only way Ive been able to get her to calm her down is Rawhide but I know its not that good to give them to much Rawhide. I just want to know if there is some thing herbal I can give her to calm and relax her till she grows outta this stage.

Yes she is full breed akc very $$$ i love her to pieces i play ball with her for about 45 minutes every day she can jump and catch it about 4 feet in the air and does amazing twists and stuff, she is a blue merle in color and had the cutest face. My main concern is that she can be so active that she might hurt herself, jumping landing on her head or running into a wall or something, Im lucky with my border collie he was the same way for the first couple years. Hes a rescue dog need I say rescue dogs are the best . Send me email I show pics if interested.

It's the breed! Herding dogs are ACTIVE! Your border collie is unusual. I have been around herding dogs and owned them for years. . .. and 4 is nothing for a border!! Thank your lucky stars that you have an unusually calm one! (I also have a 4-year-old border collie - - - drives me NUTS! Never sleep, play all day, you get the picture....)

An 11-month old Aussie needs a lot of activity, both mental and physical. It is normal for a herding breed to follow you and want to interact with you all the time, especially as a puppy! Give her the care she needs - you made that commitment when you got her.

That all being said, there is something you can get at a health vitamin store called "Rescue Remedy". They will know what you want. That helps some dogs. You put it in the water.

Better. . . get her a hobby. Take her to agility classes (fun for your both), or herding classes. Take her to an open field and play frisbee. Can she catch in the air yet? She will....and it's fun to see!

I play a minimum 4 times daily with my border, 20 minutes minimum, a fast hard ball or frisbee game. And I work full time. I knew this would be the case if I wanted herding dogs. (I also have a blue heeler.) But when I do this, they are happier, calmer, and so am I!

PS Good heavens, to the person who said this, don't ever leave your dog alone with a bone and go to work!! Techs who work in emergency see dogs all the time with pieces of bones stuck in their intestines or in their throats! The dog could CHOKE while you are gone!

Is this your first Aussie??
These are my favorite breed and have owned them for well over 20 years (before they were recognized by the dog association). At the moment we have a puppy, and a border collie/Aussies mix.
This is so typical of the Aussie! You have to get her something to do! These dogs will not only test you but many people get out smarted by them!
Please get this dog into training, this dog should have ALL her basics down already!

Did you possibly do reading about them before you got her? These are not border collies. Is she your first? Can I ask just because I love these dogs what color is her coat? Also no two Aussies look alike...
These dogs do not do well being left alone, it is highly recommended for any owner to be at home with there Aussies. Or take them to work with you at all times if they do not work (cattle or some other high energy work).
I would love to see pics of her! Is she one of these mini's? or is she standard. I have seen the mini's (or whatever name they have at the current moment) and they are so much more hyper then the standard breed. These mini's are rejected by the Aussie peeps as well. Not real good workers for cattle, or even a helper dog like mine have been. Just to small and breeding of the mini has caused changes in there personality.
I personally would never give any of my Aussies any kind of chemicals, natural or not. Rawhide not good for your dog, who did you hear this from???? My dogs always loved natural rawhide, and the clippings from the horses hooves.
I am also amazed your boarder collie is relaxed lol! Most of the farmers and ranchers here have Aussies or BC (most BC) and neither are all that calm of dogs. Introduce your Aussie to a tennis ball. This gets so much of there energy out of them!
If my Aussie (s) are not at my heals all the time I think something is wrong!
Hope this helps some and I have been a professional trainer (having experience training is also highly recommended for owning these dogs) as well as training mine as helper dogs for me so if you want to talk email! I sure would like to see pictures of her :0)
Not to many peeps have aussies.... why I guess I was so excited about seeing your post lol!

Shepherd* GSD and Beagles are HIGH energy working breeds. If he has his shots he should be going for two twenty to thirty minute walks per day MINIMUM. Slow pace. As he grows and the vet approves, increase the pace. He should have near constant mental stimulation - puzzle toys, games, activities, training. Puppies are always full of energy and curiosity. Not breed specific. Just means he needs more exercise and mental stimulation. Can't provide that, then re-homing is the best option. And researching BEFORE getting the next dog would be a good idea, preferably not until your family has learned from this experience and matures.

I'm sure there is but why do that. you must not of done your home work before getting an Aussie. Aussies are working dogs. they need to work to be happy. this is not a stage. mine is 8 years old and still hyper.i like that about the breed. they are wonderful dogs.they love and protect there families. they are good with other dogs but they do like to play. Aussie do not do well living in a back yard.they will tear up things dig under fences they will become very vocal. they needs lots and lots of exercise and lots of family time. i don't mean to be rude but maybe you just don't have the right home for an Aussie.

i gotta tell you the chances of her growing out of this stage are minimal. its probably NOT a stage. she's an aussie and they are nuts and high energy. i'm surprised to hear your border collie just wants to relax, they're generally the same way. Aussies are notorious for being high energy, job-needing dogs. I've got one myself and he's crazy. instead of letting it get to you use this high energy to bond with your dog. Long walks/runs will help as will sending her to a doggy day care a few times a week. enroll in agility or herding class. she's got the energy so put it to use!

You can try the herbal rescue remedy but it is very mild and probably won't do much towrd the energy of an aussie.

This is the typical behavior of an australian shepherd. Mine if 8 and still won't stop. If he gets near your face his tongue goes a mile a minute.

Firstly, she is a pup. Pup's are hyper.

Second, this breed is known for its energy, regardless of age.

What you need to do, instead of looking for a quick fix drug, is training.

Make sure shes getting tons of exercise (which this breed needs), and invest in a trainer to help you control the dogs hyper behaviour.

aussie's need something to do, every minute of the day. they were bred to herd sheep, etc. don't give her anything that the vet doesn't recommend. if you didn't know this about her, you shouldn't have gotten her. plus, she's a puppy! hyper anyway. if you keep her, just be patient.

Try chew toys made of pigs ears. Your dog is still a kid. Lots of walks, play that kind of thing. You can use ,now don't laugh, cat nip, skullcap, and Valerian root
