Unfortunately, not long enough. We have a revolving-door justice system that rarely gives maximum sentences even to repeat offenders. Especially in high-crime areas. They complain that the jails are overcrowded. Well, build some more! thats what we need is to build alot more prisons. Then lock up all the scumbags and THROW AWAY THE KEY!

Seriously - not enough info to answer. Depends on what state, did you assault them? prior arrests or convictions, could be more if they are considering this a felony, any other crimes charges? (stolen gun, resisting arrest, fleeing?)
