In Tudor times in 1543 the casting of guns and shot commenced which was far more supperior than had been used before.An order of 120 guns and shot took two years to fill. In 1545 there was a scottish and armarda invasion imminent,the guns where sent to portsmouth and the Isle of White.

It's hard to say when the army first used guns but they certainly had been used in many campaigns pre 1776, the year of Americas war of independence.
Even then they were not in widespread use, I have a photo of my father in law who was in the Kings Hussars, 1932, he was a trooper of the line and the pic shows him sat on his mare with his sabre and lance, he went into the first world war like that.

I think it's necessary to point out a flaw in the answer given by 'middenmak'. At Culloden the Jocks were fighting on both sides mainly for religious reasons. They were also armed with pistols,muskets and cannons.
