My dogs have been protective many times! Some interesting examples are:

Some people tried to steal some stuff off our kitchen worktops using a stick and hook through an open window. The dogs went nuts and grabbed the stick and rescued my purse. I came home to find the stuff on the floor and couldn't work out what the stick and hook contraption was. I checked witht he police and they explained that it was a local scam. The robbers must have got a shock when the dogs woke up! My dogs got a good dinner for that excellent work!

On another occasion, some one climbed the scaffold on the front of my house early in the morning. I woke up to the sound of someone fiddling with the window. The curtains were shut so I sneaked out of the room and let the dogs out of the back of the house, opening the front door. Thats when I saw the man up the scaffold. The dogs went crazy and barked and leaped up at him. He didn't dare come down until the police arrived and I took the dogs in. Once again, a well deserved dinner!

Those were Golden Retreivers.

I have two labradors and they are thr friendliest animals alive. They love everyone and always make a fuss of anyone invited in.

The postman always laughs at them as usually when he knocks and I open the door, the yellow lab is lying in her bed on her back and lets out a half hearted wuff to say hello.

We always thought the only way a burgler would get hurt is if they licked him to death or tripped him up.

However a couple of weeks ago a delivery man came to house (I thought he was a bit creepy) and when I went to take the parcel he stepped forward and put his foot in the door, I gave the usual stay back the dogs wont like it bluff, but he did it again and all h*** broke loose.

The chocolate lab appeared from nowhere, hackle up, snarling and i had to grab her by the scruff seconds before he lost a leg. The result was one very scared man and a dog that was really chuffed with herself.

I think any dog has tthe capability to protect the person it cares for if they think they are in danger.

We have a German Shepherd Dog and he is the perfect guard dog.he Lie's in the passage way during the night on guard.( 1 ear pointing to the side and the other pointing up) always on alert. You would be a fool to enter.I'm not kidding even if a fly enters our house then he will not stop chasing it until he has either ate it, or it has flew back out. Our dog is very protective over my mother with her being the only female in the house and if anyone shows aggression towards her then he will have you.Still he is a great family pet and like a lot of other fortunate dogs, is one of the family

I have a Rhodesian Ridgeback and I'm pretty sure she would protect me.

When she was just a 6 month old pup, she scared away a panhandler who stuck his head in my passenger side window while I was stopped at a light. She had a Big Bark even then! She stayed on alert and watched him until the light changed and I drove away, then she went back to sleep.
I had her tied her to the ash tree in the front yard another time while I was pruning. I heard her growl. I turned to see what was up and it was because a neighbor was walking up behind me. As soon as I greeted the neighbor, my dog stopped growling and started wagging.
The water filtration guy came to change our filters just last year, and he let himself out to go get a tool. He let himself back in without knocking and my dog charged him doing her Big Bark. He moved faster than I've ever seen a man move, poor guy! LOL After he rang the bell and I opened the door for him though, she wagged like nothing had happened.

It's never been necessary, but I'm confident that if I ever react to a stranger with fear or anger instead of being calm, she will stay on guard and do what it takes.

If you're trying to decide on a type of dog, I would only recommend ridgebacks though if you've got a strong personality and can be sure you're always the boss, and if you're willing to keep up with training on a lifelong basis. Ridgebacks are smart and like to test their boundaries. Also, most of them are very sensitive and can be moody, so you have to train with a patient, creative hand. Harsh methods tend to just make them shut down.

Our little poodle is very good at barking when someone enters the house. He stops right away when it's a family member. He also barks if a family member tries sneaking down the hallway to the bedroom, or if I'm in the shower and someone tries to come into the bathroom. He's not overly yippy, he just barks enough to let me know someone's coming. I believe he would try to fight off an intruder with all of his 9 pounds. He think's he's a German Shepherd.

Yup. My little boy is only a year and a half old, and only fifteen pounds, but he has got a protective streak. He doesn't have a problem if someone comes up to hug me or just walks close, but if he senses that I'm uncomfortable, he lets loose barking and tugging on the leash. He will attempt to bite the ankles, but stops immediatly if I tell him no. He won't bite unless I tell him to, or I am acting scared. He barks whenever anybody comes inside the house and knocks on the door. I live in a not-so-great area so I'm always grateful for a little more scare factor. :) He's a cockapoo, by the way.

I have three dogs and all three would protect me and each other in case of danger. All three have.
ON one occasion my golden retriever mix attacked a man crossing the fence to my yard from behind me which sent him scrambling and stumbling away.
On another occasion, my spouse was out walking the Pit mixed puppy who is otherwise very gentle and friendly went on the attack when someone tried to mug him. The dog quickly banished the guy as soon as he put his hand on my spouse and demanded money.
Once when walking the dogs a man hiding in some bushes got freaky and the dogs went berserk and that ended that.
So yes, dogs are naturally protective and don't have to be trained to guard anyone. In fact, guard dog training screws dogs up unless they are professionally trained for military or law enforcement purposes.
That Golden mix that attacked the intruder is so friendly that she will usually roll over and show her belly to complete strangers and she is otherwise so gentle I wouldn't have ever guessed she had it in her if I didn't know how naturally protective dogs are when they sense a real threat.
Occasionally people have a dog that is a real "scaredy cat" and will run when or if there is a confrontation and they can get away.
But I didn't get my dogs for protection. That is just a fringe benefit I got with all three of them.

I have 2 great pyrenees and I have no doubt in my mind that they would do whatever they could to protect me and my family. When they are on alert and know something is wrong they have an incredibly deep and loud bark. I seriously doubt that anyone hearing those two bark like that would even attempt to come into the house any further.

Not only that, but my dogs have very big teeth and very strong jaws. If they got a hold of someone, they would be in a world of hurt.

Japanese Akita

I have heard numerous stories of Japanese Akita's protecting there homes and owners. I personally own one but have not been burgled. However:

I was in the woods getting water bottle out of my bag when my Akita started growling and barking and lunging forward. I looked to see what he was doing and I noticed two blokes coming through the woods in my direction. My Akita would not let them pass. I had to restrain him and let him know it was alright. My Akita was only four months old at the time. On another occassion my Akita responded in the same way when he thought I was being attacked on the beach. He was seven months old at the time. He is 100% friendly with all dogs and people. He never barks or growls. The only time he has done so is if he feels I am in danger. I believe that he would defend my and my family to the death. At a very early age he has already shown he is willing to have a go. By the way - my Akita at seven months old stood at 25.5 inches to the shoulder and seven stone in weight. Akita's grow to 28 inches at shoulder and can weigh 10 stone in weight plus. Hope this answers your question.

This has happen to me when one night approx. 2:00 am someone was pounding on my door, yelling let me in , let me in, I had no idea who it was and was very relunted to go the door he kept banging on the door until the door flew open, I had a Min Pin Male who corner the man in my Livingroom while I called the Police, The man kept yelling call off the dog, he is going to bite mwe, he replied I don't even have a dog where did this dog come from, once Police arrived, I waited outside , we turned lights on and the man then realized he was in the wrong house, he had beehn drinking quite heavlly and forced his way into a house he thought was his and was met by my dog instead and the man was totally confused, he became very angry with me cause he said your dog is going to bite me, but he failed to realize he broke in my door and did over $200.00 worth of damage to my door that have never been paid for, He never even I'm sorry just yelling about the dog, well the dog came to my defense for me and our home and he wasn't a lg dog size did not matter. If you have a dog and he is treated right they will put there life o n the line for you, for sure.
