Before installing an antivirus, it's best you run one remotely to make sure you're not building an antivirus wall on top of a virus.
I recommend Panda Activescan for that:

As for a software AV, I second AntiVir or Avast. I've used AVG, it was pretty awful (at least the free version was).

AVG and Avast are both good anti virus programs. I personally didn't care for the icons they put on my processes bar. Kind of got annoying.
I recommend this one by Computer Associates, Its not free but they give you a free trial that should be for a year. I like this one better then the other two.

AVG Free edition. You have to carefully bypass all offers to sell you the pro version, but it is available for free and works very well.

AVG free edition they also have spyware protection for free, just type it in and thats the first thing that pops up

For Viruses, I suggest that you look at Antivir:

AVG:

and avast!:

Each of these are free software solutions for virus protection. I suggest that you try all of them (though not at once!) and see which one you prefer.
