even if the artist is the worst singer on earth but writes their own music i would respect them more than a artist that sings well but doesn't write there own music. wat would be the point of being a singer if u don't write your own music! For example some ppl hate Avril Lavigne but i respect her beacuse she writes her own music. what do you guys think?

~I wish my favorite singer (George Jones, The Living Legend), wrote more of his songs, but no one can put more feeling into the songs he sings whether he wrote them himself or not!

I've never heard of Avril Lavigne!

So YES, I still respect a music artist that doesn't write their own music.

Some are just good singers, so they don't write.
Some are just good writers, but they can't sing.

It's all good.~

Sure, that's called a Singer. It's nice that you respect writer's but, everyone can sing written songs. Some people just get paid to do so because they are great singers.
You mad at Hendrix for singing Dylan's Along the Watchtower?

You think Joe Cocker should not have done Beatles She Cam In Through The Batroom Window?

How bout Gun's and Roses remake of Knockin On Heavens door.

See what I mean?

Look at the flip side, what's the point of writing music if you're not gonna sing it? How can you respect a songwriter who won't sing his/her own songs? It's all about commercialization nowadays. I'm sure there's artists managers all over the place that are just swapping songs from their nerdy day dreaming song writers to fit the image of the artists they're representing.
And you don't have to respect a crappy Canadian singer because she can put two words that rhyme together. She still sucks and her songs are aimed at kids because they are an easy target since she looks like one, if she wasn't a public figure and was a single white guy, she'd be considered a pedophile, she's 22 years old and the only song I can think of her singing is about a skater boy.

Yes. I tend to prefer artists who write their own stuff and play an instrument. Having said that, there are some people out there who are phenomenal singers but have no writing talent so I see nothing wrong with collaborating with someone since there are writers who can't sing or don't want the spotlight.

Yes, the same way I respect a mother who raises an adopted child. The child may not be hers, but that should not make any difference in the way this mother is going to raise the child. An artist can sing other people's work, and still be a good artist.

If they can't sing, and they can't play a instrument, they aren't an musician. Music and poetry are two different things; they just happen to be in sync with eachother. So, if they just don't have the poetry-writing talent, but could sing and play an instrument, I'd respect them as a musician but not as a poet. If they can write poetry but cannot sing or play an instrument, I'd respect them as a poet and not a musician.

Overall, though, I'd rather listen to good music than worry about who wrote the lyrics.

Elvis didn't write his own lyrics, but he was one of the greatest musicians of all times.

Well, I still do.
It's not about are they write their own music or aren't they...
It's about knowing what you're doing, really-really understand it, believe in what you're doing...

Some people are meant to write, some others meant to do somebody eleses work.
As an example, if you're writing a work for more then 1 player, then you'll need somebody else to play for you, are atleast with you. Imagine if there's no one want to play/sing other then their own work... no one would play your work wasn't it?
the second thing, wou would only writing the instrument you're able to play, that's mean you're writing posiblity is so much limited....

Playing/singing or even just to intepret somebody elses work is nothing easy, it's need alot of dicipline also...

Now, I ask you, what do you think about people (who claimed to be an artist) who play/sing somebody elses music or write their own music, but the only reason that they did it, is nothing for their own believe, but for money, for power, for fame, they did it because the the people might like it, because what they did is something in trend, they did it because their producer told them to do so. What do you think about them?

Now, this is the type of person that i don't give even a little respect.
I would choose some one that can't sing, and don't even write their own music, but they did it seriously, they did it because their passion and love of music...

Hope this help.
Bless You...

I DO. Sometimes people are very talented in different ways. They may write the best song ever, but maybe they don't have the voice to sing. Or, maybe they aren't good at writing music at all but their voice is the greatest. Some people do it all & that's great, but others work together & may achieve so much more.

I take it Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingas, Jose Carrerras, Barbara Streisand, Celine Dion, Charlotte Church, Andre Bocelli, Elvis Presley, to name just a few, are beneath your standards?

Beethoven was deaf and gave the world the most outrageous music.

We all have gifts. Some can sing but cannot write. Can you imagine a world deprived of these beautiful voices?

Don't be a snob, it's ugly.
