I heard that lcd is better than plasma because of the pixels per line (or something like that).

my husband fixes tvs. Plasmas dont last as long and have a life of about 7 years before they burn out. They are more expensive to fix because they are usually only fixed on board level, not component. Most plasmas have to have external speakers hooked up also because they arent on the tv. check out this buying guide website for plasmas. has useful info!

This is a subjective question. It depends on what you're looking for in a TV.

Plasmas tend to provide an overall better picture quality. They can produce more natural colors and have a better contrast ratio. This is most visible when viewing movies or other "dark" video. Also Plasma offers better off axis viewing angles than LCD. LCD is getting better, but still not quite up to par with Plasma.

LCD on the other hand are brighter and work better than a plasma in a bright room. Also most LCD sets have antireflective coating that helps eliminate reflections. Though the colors aren't natural, some prefer them to Plasma.

As far as reliability, I think the jury will still be out on this one. When plasmas first hit the scene, they were rated with lower life spans, say 20k hours of use and were pretty delicate and complex electronics wise.

Newer generation sets are rated for longer live 60k hours and the electronics have been improved. Regardless wether you choose LCD or Plasma, I don't expect either technology to last as long as the good old CRT. Those things can go forever. I expect anywhere from 5 to 10 years of life. It's hard to say since these sets haven't been out very long.

I tend to prefer the look of the plasma TVs over the LCD. When shopping for my tv it seemed to me that the individual pixes were more noticable on the LCD TVs, while the plasmas had a smoother sharper image. However, there were some very noticable differences between the different brands of plasmas. Some brands tended to have a much softer image - almost to the point of appearing blurry. I tended to like the Panasonic (which is what I bought) and the Sony.

But it is important to note that I bought my TV about 4 years ago. A great deal of advancement has happend since then and improvements may have been made in LCD technology to improve picture quality.

LCD is a sharper picture with more contrast, and plasmas have a softer picture with more color saturation. Depends on what you like. But plasmas are generally more expensive. I would go with a LCD if I had to choose between the 2. I have a technology called LCOS (liquid Crystal on silicone) which is a cross between a DLP (digital Light Processing) and a LCD. Best of both worlds. I think its the best technology/best picture out there, and they are not that expensive either.
