To start you could walk or run in place if you are new to exercising. However a treadmill is good at getting you to a higher level of cardio then you could ever do running in place. You also can increase the incline, and speed to push yourself.
I do always reccomend that if you buy a treadmill to weigh the pros and cons-
Are you going to use it? (have you been reularly exercising already)
Have you worked with a trainer before for your specific goals? This prevents the "I don't know what I'm doing" thing to happen.
Is this the only exercise I will do? Is that the right choice then?
Personally I would rather work out at a gym and let them perform the maintenance and know I have people around me if I have questions.

to be able to run or walk when the weather is bad. to work on a faster pace since you can set the speed. most would not do the running or walking in place and treadmill will tell you how far and how fast you are going as well as possible heart rate etc. you can also get a hill workout inside that you could not with doing it in place

people buy treadmills so that they have the privacy of running or walking in their own home and yes you could run in place but on a treadmill you can have it like your going up a hill or you can walk like your on a flat surface. and also it challenges you on how fast you can go.

I just bought a used treadmill for my dog to get some exercise during the cold winter months. We are going to tie her in and let her trot for 20 or 30 minutes a day. That will get her in shape.

I want a treadmill because I like to run and need to lose weight but I snapped a bunch of ligaments in my foot. I am healed but my foot kills me if I try to run on concrete or even grass now. I need the cushion of the treadmill.

They buy treadmills so as they can watch the same TV shows that they used to watch sitting down. which incidently, caused them to get fat and sloppy in the first place. you know what? if I went around town on trash pick-up days, I could make me a small fortune on exersize equipment along the side of the road.

How do you walk in place? People buy them because they feel if it is sitting in the room it might actually get used. Too often not the case.

We bought one last year. He's ridden it about 5 times, and I've been on about 3 times. It's gathering dust. I guess we buy them at a very high price, so we can be the fools to sell them at a fraction of the cost later.
