Ok, so I'm moving from the Bronx, NY to Portland and I need to get work. Temping, however, isn't going to cut it since I'll need to be making a lot more so I can pay rent and electricity, food, the works. I went to a 5 day drilling course on bartending, got the books and certificate, have the equipment and a stocked bar at home, but have never worked in an actual bar. I've saved up about a month and a half of rent and am putting the move on a credit card... Since I know bartending's fun and a good way to make some cash, I just need to know what's the best way to get a bartending gig in Portland.

I did the same thing you did so I could get a bartending position except mine was a 3 week training course. I got the certificate and everything and went out applying everywhere in Los Angeles and never got hired. I heard the same thing everywhere I went - that you have to have prior experience. I never did end up getting a bartending job even after applying for probably around 100 places. I learned pretty quickly that the best way to become a bartender is to make friends with other bartenders who can get you a low profile shift like on a monday morning or something and work your way to the good shifts. Also barbacking is a great way to get your foot in the door. I know a lot of guys who started out barbacking and worked their way into a bartending position.

Sometimes too, it can be about being in the right place at the right time. Don't assume though that the bartending certificate will get you a job because most places will want experience. If you get an interview you might also try letting the interviewer know that you are willing to get behind the bar and make a couple drinks to demonstrate your knowledge.

It might be different in Portland than it is in LA so I wish you luck!

I'm sure you will get a job in a bar easily. I saw that you do have a certificate. We do have a school here in Portland called The Portland Bartending Academy. Great School. Maybe you could get some tips from them. I'm sure someone in a bar will help get you started. People in Portland are very friendly and helping.Good Luck.

You haven't any bartending revel in, so I would not rent you. Here's a tip: eliminate any process out of your resume that you simply did not paintings for a minimum of one yr. No one cares that you simply labored at a gasoline station for per week. It truthfully makes you appear unhealthy to say very quick employment. And quite, get the modeling "institution" off your resume. It's simply ridiculous, notably because you did not conclude it. Did no person ever coach you the way to write a legitimate resume? You quite will have to study that.

bartendending schools won't get you in as well as just knowing someone. Portland is all about knowing someone. I'd say make some friends- go to some bars....make friends with some bartenders or restruant owners. Go to strip clubs.
