I believe that they were bapist ( I may be wrong). I think that they said that a good slave will go to heaven, and will be able to serve the master forever.

Most in the south belonged to the Baptist church. When the Baptist church was founded, part of the church regulations were that the congregation as a whole would vote on who could and could not become a member. This allowed them to keep the blacks out of the church, even up until the early 1970's. The church for a long time used verses from the Bible that spoke of being good to your slaves as a way to justify slavery.

Slavery is not something that was invented by white people. There were slaves even during the time the Bible was written, but they are not affiliated with a church. The Apostle Paul had a good friend named Onesimus who was a runaway slave of Philemon's.

All kinds of them.

Some churches did as they do now: they reflected back the culture and said it's okay. They maybe counselled people to treat their slaves well.

Other churches did not. In fact the anti-slavery movement was, more than anything else, a Christian relgious movement, most of its leaders were clergy, and it orgnaized through the churches, at a time when the enlightened culture felt slavery was okay, many Christians felt that if we were all made in God's image and we all had free will, weren't we equal.

"If the Son shall make you free, you shall be free indeed."

It was the Christian churches that began and continued the fight for slave emancipation. Countries with predominently other relgions sold slaves for many years afterwards. I believe some countries still sell people.

Hey troll, why do you ask a question you already know the answer to? What difference does it make now anyway? Those of us who know the truth accept it. Even still, Jesus has made it possible for those of us who accept Him not to even be worried about what a few confused, demonically inspired, dead souls did in the past. Besides, to be apart from this body is to be present with the Lord. Those who committed such heiresses stood before God and He dealt with them righteously I'm more than sure.

As far as I know, all the various denominations condoned slavery except the Quakers. There were Quaker slaveowners, but they were frowned upon by most of their co-religionists. Many early Unitarians also condemned slavery.
