Dating groups, bars, church functions, local clubs (cycling club, toastmasters, what have you)...
Bars are ok to meet people...but you tend to not really get to know people there as much as "hook-up." If you are looking to socialize go the first routes I mentioned.

Online is really the best place to meet if you don't go out. It gives you a fairly safe outlet to get to know someone without investing too much in the beginning. Although, there are some weirdos and cheaters online, just as in bars!
