Interesting question. Both, because of course it is necessary to eat to survive, but there are things that I eat (and I think almost everyone does this) that not only feed your hunger but go above and beyond that. I eat them for the taste more than for what it provides me, though some foods could be either good or bad for you, and still taste good. I don't know of anyone that eats just to survive, as it is not really the nature of the U.S.; not that there is anything at all wrong with it if someone does, but no one I know does that.

Obviously I eat for survival, but I consume only what I find appealing, and if it's not so good for me then so be it. None of us will live forever, and the extra few years given by all the health conscience ways are the years I don't really want. I can just see someone talking about how they lived to be a hundred by eating right and exercising while they're emptying their colostomy bag, yeah that's worth it.

For years I've eaten for pleasure, but lately I've been forced to eat for health.

I eat pepperoni, stroganoff, rib eye steaks, caramel cups. You could say that I mainly eat for pleasure.

Many people in Africa will eat whatever they can get their hands on just to survive. Remember that.
