Hors d'œuvre, (IPA: French [ɔʁˈdœvʁ] but often in English as [ɔɹˈdɝv]; French plural: hors d'œuvre, without an extra s; English plural often hors d'œuvres), also known as appetizer(s), refer to the food served before or outside of (French: hors d') the main dishes of a meal (œuvre, literally "work").

In North America, hor d'oeuvre are hot or cold appetizers which may be eaten before a meal to whet the appetite, or if as a selection, on their own for a cocktail party. They are generally no more than 2 or 3 bites in size and can be eaten standing up, preferably without the aid of cutlery.

The definition in Europe is somewhat different.

They are appetisers (usuallyto eat before a meal). An example would be:

Garlic Mushroom Nibbles

Ingredients

6 mushrooms
1 clove garlic
1 tablespoon chopped parsley
vegan puff pastry

Preheat the oven to 200 degrees.

Chop up the puff pastry into squares which are the size you wish your nibbles to be. Pile several squares on top of each other so that it is about 2 cm tall and press them together at the edges. Bake in the oven until risen and golden brown. Once cooked put on a cooling tray for 10 minutes.

Cut the mushrooms into small pieces and crush the garlic. Fry in 2 tablespoons of oil until the mushrooms are golden brown. Once the pastry has cooled press in the middle to form a hole to put the filling in. Spoon on some of the mushroom mixture and sprinkle with the parsely.

Serve immediately.

They are small foods generally eaten before a meal.
They are distinguished from snacks, because they are generally prepared in the home, not out of a bag or box. A typical Hors D'oeuvres would be a deviled egg, or a stuffed mushroom. A snack would be a potato chip or a Frito.

The purpose of the hors d'œuvre is to whet the appetite; if there is a long waiting period between when the guests arrive and when the meal is served (for example, during a cocktail hour), these might also serve the purpose of sustaining guests during the long wait. Hor d'œuvres are sometimes served with no meal served afterward. This is the case with many reception and cocktail party events.
