I recently bought home anew kitten named Tobey. I already had two cats and a dog. Tobey gets along fine with the cats, since he is used to being around cats. The dog is another story. Roger is a husky mix and is medium sized, Tobey seems slightly scared of him, but curious. Tobey will pounce on Roger, swat at him and try to play, but when Roger responds to Tobey, Tobey hisses. Roger is starting to get annoyed at Tobey. How can I teach Tobey not to provoke Roger?

Try sitting on the floor near Roger (he should be lying down) and holding Tobey. Slowly pet Tobey and quietly praise him for being calm. Roger can ignore Tobey if he wants, but if he sniffs a bit that's all right. The goal is to have both of them calm and relaxed around each other.

If Tobey does start to bother Roger, give him a verbal warning ("Easy" or "Uh, uh"). Praise him if he responds. If he doesn't listen, remove him and put him in another room for 30 to 60 seconds. With repetition, he should learn to calm down when told to. Tobey will also be better once he learns to trust Roger and realize that he isn't a threat.

You need to stay nearby when you're home and keep an eye on them. Let them interact so they can used to each other but when Roger starts to get annoyed, step in and save him immediately. He needs to be able to trust you so that he doesn't feel the need to take things into his own hands. Also, play lots with Tobey and make sure he has plenty of fun things to do. Eventually he'll realize that Roger's just not that much fun. (Unless they learn to snuggle!)

When you're not home, they should be separated, for Roger's sanity and Tobey's safety.

They kind of need to work it out themselves. But you might try giving Tobey a squirt from a water bottle each time he starts to annoy Roger.

It sounds as if they will work it out amongst themselves. There is a new addition to the pack & boundaries are being set. Roger is teaching Tobey.

honestly I would let them work it out, your dog is much bigger than the cat so obviously the dogs idea of playing is a bit different than the cats so when your dog responds of course it would frighten the cat lol but monitor them and just make sure that your cat doesn't start picking on your dog and provoking a fight to occur if this happens simply take the instigator of the fight and place them elsewhere in your house for a bit and then let them come back down they will eventually learn that if they keep provoking fights then they will get separated. best of luck to you

He's a kitten - play (which includes pouncing on other critters) is what they do!

He will probably wise up.

Roger will probably be okay if he's put up with this from the other cats at all ...

But do keep an eye on things.

you cant really do anything. They must learn to become used to each other on their own, which is a process that usually takes a couple of weeks, but after that if they are still not "friends" then I don't think they will ever get along.

you cant, leave them alone, they will work it out, i havee 6 cats 3 dogs, some love each other, some tolerate and some just dont like each other, cats are smart enough to learn whos safe and who to stay away from.
