Since its a small shop, you won't be able to avoid him...I think you should just call him on everything he says until he learns to just shut his mouth. Like when he says something rude, say, WOW! That's rude. People like that know nobody will ever say anything to them and their behavior just gets worse. Turn it around on him. It sucks to work in an environment like that.

If your question is serious, I would suggest you determine first if you can talk to him about what it is that is bothering you that he does. Perhaps you guys can come to a compromise. Like, is he using your tools without permission or does he not carry his full load? Whatever it is, if you're supposed to be a team, you have to communicate and work together. The best thing to do in resolving conflicts, is to talk it over. If you think you need a mediator, talk it over with your supervisor and see what he says.
Good luck. Glad you don't have a temper - you might be tempted to bash him over the head with one of those big tool things. I have a co-worker here in the office - sometimes when I hear that ugly voice of hers, I just want to bash her on the head with my ink jet printer.
