i just got back from the doctor and my blood pressure was 149 over 78..they said the top number was high and i've never had that happen.. my question is, can being overly anxious cause this? i have an anxiety disorder and my anxiety level is pretty high today.

yes this can definetly be the cause. i got told i had to stay late at work one day and mine was 207/102 and i am usually 114/74. Try destressing if you can.

It is a little high, it could also be because you were at the doctors office. Some people get the "white coat syndrome" and anytime they see a doctor or nurse their blood pressure goes up. What you could do is buy a home blood pressure monitor and take your blood pressure a few times throughout the day and then take it to your doctor. If you find that throughout the day your blood pressure is staying up and your anxiety level is up maybe you need to be on some medication to control it.
The home monitors have gotten cheaper, you can buy them at drug stores for like $20-30. Take it an hour after eating and make sure you rest a little before doing it, not laying down but not up walking around either. Ideally your blood pressure should be 120/80, the top number shouldn't be over 140.
Good luck!

Yes, anxiety can cause a rise in blood pressure. Stress is also a factor as is caffeine intake. Relax in a dark quiet room and it'll go down some.

Sure, it can. That's not outrageously high, so don't get too worried, but it's higher than it sould be.

Also, blood pressure can vary many points within a short period of time.
