I think wine is really hard to buy for people. I'm getting a friend a gag gift bottle of "Really Cheap White Wine." It was $7, it's got a funny label, and it's in our price range. If it's not good, that's okay. However, if you want to buy a nice wine I would recommend a Yellow Tail brand. They're all pretty cheap (less than $20!). As for the type, that's just going to depend. I'm a fan of Cabernet Sauvignon, but I also like a Pinot Noir.

Something else you can do it give the friend a gift card to a wine store -- that's always good. However, if you're going to take it to dinner then just go with something that sounds good. Yellow Tail's website (as well as many others) give a little overview of the wine so you can figure out what to get. Good luck!

D'Arenberg The Footbolt Shiraz

Franciscan Oakville Estate Merlot

Hill of Content Grenache-Shiraz

Francis Coppola Diamond Series Black Label Claret

Any of these will be excellent as a gift and less than $20. (Some of the wines suggested above me are just plain nasty - like the Vendange... and while the Ruffino Chianti Classico Gold Label is an excellent wine, you probably won't be able to get near it for $20)

BV Tapestry or Georges de Latour are 2 remarkable Cabernets! finished bodied, tasty reds, that you'll sip and enjoy very somewhat. The Tapestry is a more advantageous suited fee of the both wines (getting the most bang for your dollar it truly is!). The Georges de Latour is BV's properly wine....they have been making this wine for over a one hundred years. not many vineyard's in California can say they have been making good wine for that lengthy. good luck :) those wines will fee slightly more advantageous than the different wines that were suggested to you. The wines that others have suggested to you, defnitely are literally not interior a similar league as tap and GDL. the affordable wines that were suggested to you're good for his or her funds and classification; yet in case you opt for some thing more advantageous severe and intensely delicious try my techniques. :)

Depends on what kind of red wine they like: I will be giving the following wines for Christmas this year: Bogle Petite Syrah (10.00 or less and well worth more) very light, Clos Du Bois Merlot (15.00), Rancho Zabaco Zinfindel (17.00)

That would pretty much depend on if they like a heavy red or a light one. A heavy one such a Cabernet Sovinigon, or Merlot De Champs would be good. But on the lighter side a good Pinot Noir or Burgundy Might just do the trick.

I hate to disappoint you about the price, but for about 5 bucks you can get a bottle of Vendange Merlot, that tastes better than many wines that are much more expensive. I serve it all the time from a decanter.

Lots of good suggestions---I'm with Jesse T on the Toasted Head label. Their Chardonnay is exceptional, too, and I'm not a big fan of Chardonnay!
