The larger dog must have been the dominant one. Now they are fighting to see who will be dominant. You should show them you are the dominant one. Be their pack leader.

whether or not your larger dog was the alpha dog, the issue is that change has come upon your pack's delicate balance. the problem here is that there should be NO fighting due to pack insecurity at all if you are providing proper leadership. you are their leader and they must look to you and give you their complete trust. you can do this by stopping such fights IMMEDIATELY. have you ever seen some dogs fighting, and then another dog will rush in fast as lightning and grab them both, or stare them both down? this is because dogs themselves do not like disharmony within the pack. when your dogs begin to bicker, you can poke them with your hand, nudge them with your knee, or even just speak deeply to them. never get excited or yell or try to use physical force. a true leader does not need to do these things and dogs will disrespect and fear those that do.

Your larger dog may have been the "alpha" (I am so sorry for your loss), maybe not. One of the smaller could have been the top dog, with the larger in second place, so to speak. Now that he is gone, the other could be trying to challenge. No one can know for sure without observing your dogs. I recommend that you have a private trainer come to your house to help you restore harmony. Your vet should be able to refer you to someone, or go to www.apdt.com.

It's likely that the larger dog was the Alpha dog. Now your two little dogs are fighting for new dominance.

I'm guessing the larger departed dog (sorry to hear) was the Alpha of the group and they are now settling who will take its place.

If the large dog was the dominant one, now that he's gone, the two smaller dogs are competing for alpha position now.

If you have multiple dogs, they live in an organized heirarchy. If one or both of the smaller dogs were lower in the heirarchy than your large dog, they are trying to re-establish the order between the two of them. It should subside as they figure everything out.
