Being a former chef and a food history buff, the romans and egyptians were eating them centurys ago, that is were the myth of the sexual properties came from, some time they would consume hundreds at a time.

And if you can believe it, at one time lobsters were considered as garbage food, in the 1800's they were thrown away or served to the poor, until some like Escoffier made them a classical and refined dish, and the boom they were high society food just like oysters, caviar and truffles
