The ball is actually not that high up, and is surrounded by some pretty tall buildings, so the best place to see it would be right in Times Square.
Check the Marriott Marquis and the W Times Square Hotels to see if they are offering any special viewing parties.
It is probably just as much find to find a bar/restuarant/club that you like and watch the ball drop on TV like most people will be doing!!

I, as well as every native New Yorker will tell you that the WORST place to watch the ball drop is in Time Square. It is truly a tourist trap. I suggest you and your friends find a bar and watch the ball on tv and have fun. If you want to see the ball, you have to basically get your spot up to 10 hours in advance. I am not kidding you. You will be penned in by police barricades and not be allowed to bring alcohol and if you have a bag it WILL be searched. On top of that, you will be very cold. If you decide to leave the penned in area, you will not be allowed back in. Also, the hotels that have the best views are booked up to a year in advance and many office buildings will have security in them so you won't be able to go up them to see the ball drop. I would say if you have a friend that has an apartment with a good view that is the best option other than finding a bar and watching it on tv.

Times Square is definitely the best place to watch the ball drop if you want to be in the middle of the action! However, you've got to get there EARLY to get a good spot. I'd say anywhere on Broadway, from 42nd to 45th is decent. You want to make sure you're dressed warmly (lots of layers!) and bring some food and drinks too. I spent New Year's Eve '99 in Times Square and sat at the corner of 44th and Broadway, it was great! We got there around noon and luckily had a big enough group that we could walk in shifts to find a bathroom to use. It's definitely something that I think everybody should do at least once in their lives! Have fun!

I moved to New York 21 years ago. My first New Year's Eve, I did the Times Square thing, and I thought, okay I definitely don't need to do that anymore. And it's even worse now because of all the security concerns: there are barricades all over the place and you can only stand in certain places. I guess you could go there just to say you did it, but I agree with everyone who recommended watching it on TV.

There are some hotels in Time Square, like the Marriott, where you might have access in their restaurant, or if you're a guest. Of course, the best way is if you know someone with an office in Times Sq., and use their windows. I had that pleasure once, and it was fun... watching the ball drop, having a private party, above and away from the maddening crowd.

I say this with all sincerity. Go through Times Square during the day and get a flavor for the set up and then watch it on TV as the other poster said.
I've lived here for going on 49 New Year's Eves and you wouldn't get me there at gunpoint!
