Angels bless and angels keep
Angels guard me while I sleep
Bless my heart and bless my home
Bless my spirit as I roam
Guide and guard me through the night
and wake me with the morning's light.
Amen
or
Angel of God, my Guardian dear,
To whom God's love commits me here;
Ever this day, be at my side
To light and guard
To rule and guide
or
Angel of God, my guardian dear,
to whom God's love commits me here;
Watch over me throughout the night,
keep me safe within your sight.

I dont understand why christians insist on bringing up religion to young minds, heres a poem from a great poetess
THE LIE
by Janet O'Neill
A child is born, his father beams
Another chance to live his dreams.
A new life now to guide and mold,
He'll tell the child what he's been told.
An intellect to quickly seize.
Embrace the faith while reason flees,
So much of life spent on your knees.
So much of life spent on your knees.
* * *
Baptize the innocent with tricks
Of sacrifice and crucifix.
Whispered prayers and chanted psalm
Deliver fear and guilt with calm.
Behind nonsense of ritual
Words tempt of heaven, threaten hell.
Reality is hard to sell.
Reality's so hard to sell.
* * *
Truth is harder still to find.
To keep the faith you close the mind!
And faith, not intellect, is chief
When minds are frozen in belief.
Smear the ashes on the brow
Starve, but feed the sacred cow.
Torah, Koran, bible scribes
Recite the dusty diatribes.
Recite, recite the diatribes.
* * *
Quote endless scripture, Pray the beads,
Worship countless deities.
Proclaiming love dispense the hate,
Banish - excommunicate!
Scorn the man whom reason rules,
Congregate with holy fools.
Celebrate all martyrdom.
Capture minds while they're still young.
Be sure to get them when they're young.
* * *
Cathedrals vaulted ceilings high
Regally dress up the lie.
Burn the incense, sing and sway
Superstition saves the day!
Ring the bells and genuflect
Dance with snakes around your neck.
Wail at the wall, bow to the east
Ignorance is a senseless beast.
Shout fire and brimstone, heaven and hell,
But fear the individual.
Fear most the individual.

The thing about prayer isn't praying some mindless recited prayer. God doesn't want us to speak to Him in this manner. Do you speak this way with others? God wants us to talk to Him as we talk with each other. Yes there are times when a recited prayer can be used, but normally God wants us to speak to Him what is on our hearts just as we would our most trusted friend/relative/loved one.
If you are going to teach your son anything I would suggest you teach him to speak to God just as he speaks to you. If something is troubling him then tell him to speak to God what is on his heart. This is what God wants...a personal relationship.

I would tell the boy that God cares so much about him. The child needs to know that he can trust God. If you give him a name to say, tell him about Jesus. And if he thinks thatthere is something there to harm him, tell that something to go away, in Jesus name. Tell him that there is godly power even in the name of Jesus for those that live God. And the 'somethings' HAVE to go away, because there is nothing more powerful than Jesus.
I hope that helps.

Shouldn't you find out why he is afraid and address the specific problems he is having rather than simply telling him that invisible beings will save him from all the bad things in the world?

Luke 2:8
[ The Shepherds and the Angels ] And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night.
-Explain to him that we are the flock and God is the shepherd and the that the Shepherd takes care of His sheep.
Psalm 121:7

You really think that the idea of something watching him in bed is going to help?

I hope he never stands on a roof and thinks "That's OK, the angels will save me".
