Yom Kippur is probably the most important holiday of the Jewish year. Many Jews who do not observe any other Jewish custom will refrain from work, fast and/or attend synagogue services on this day. Yom Kippur occurs on the 10th day of Tishri. The holiday is instituted at Leviticus 23:26 et seq.

The name "Yom Kippur" means "Day of Atonement," and that pretty much explains what the holiday is. It is a day set aside to "afflict the soul," to atone for the sins of the past year. This day is, essentially, your last appeal, your last chance to change the judgment, to demonstrate your repentance and make amends.

Yom Kippur atones only for sins between man and G-d, not for sins against another person. To atone for sins against another person, you must first seek reconciliation with that person, righting the wrongs you committed against them if possible. That must all be done before Yom Kippur.

See? All you have to do is ask and you get an answer....or 2....or 3.....etc etc, lol! As others have said, it is the most important day on the Jewish calendar following the Jewish new year. It is when we ask G-d for forgiveness and repent for all our sins. We do not eat for 25 hours, starting at sunset the previous night. We do not wear leather shoes, or perfume either. We wear white clothes, because we are likened to angels on that day. Even most of the non-religious Jews celebrate this day as it is a very holy day! Every Jewish person's fate for the upcoming year is decided on this day too. The words Yom Kippur literally translated mean day of atonement. I hope I answered your question! Have a great day! :)

It is the Jewish day of repentence that falls a few days after Rosh Hashana (the Jewish New Year.) On Yom Kippur (pronounced YOME KEE-PURR) Jews go to the temple and ask God to forgive them for all the sins they have committed over the previous year. Many Jews also fast on this day.
