I have a 92 Maxima - During cold mornings when i try and start my car there is a choke, grinding noise for about 2 seconds and then it starts. The sound reminds me of when a car is already started adn you turn the Key again to start it - yea that kinda sound. This only happenes in cold weather.

Locate the solenoid on the starter and tape it (not too hard) with a small hammer. If this doesn't work, your starter gears may have gotten off track with the engine.

I would say the starter. And if not then always be sure and check the battery. I have a 91 Maxima and it often gives me truoble too when it's cold.

that starter is working overtime , do you plug in your block heater or can you get some heat to it for about 3 hours before it starts ? clean your battery connections ( even if you did it in July ) 5w 30 oil ? it all helps , even a 100 watt bulb in a trouble lamp hung under your starter all night ( there are temp. activated timers too ) will help , but beware of fuel lines and driving off with it in place (experience ) good luck

Sounds like you're starter- I'd have it looked at asap-when it does quit-you'll be stuck where ever you are.
