I'm doing a sociolog project and I need positive implications on a social problem (children in foster homes).

I lived in one once. It was worse than home. Before anyone gets mad it was not the foster parents they were sweet and loving. It was the other kids. They learn bad things from their situation and subject other innocent kids to it. It was about 25 years ago and I still remember.

It's an alternative to the home life (or lack of) they were in before being in foster care. Many children have escaped poor living conditions as far as sanitation and poor emotional and physical conditions such as sexual/physical abuse from family members. The family they were in before foster care may have contained an individual who has drug problems or drinking problems and so being away from those people is better than being around those people.
I'm also sure there is some kind of medical insurance when you are a foster child, not sure though???/
Being in foster care may give the child an opportunity to be a part of a caring loving "normal" family instead of what they may have had before.

food, clothing, and shelter. Which, presumably, were not being provided, or could no longer be provided under their parent's care.

Hope: if the children are from an abusive family, there is hope the foster family will inadvertently message that their family prior was dysfunctional.

In the case of death of birth parents, foster parenting would give children a sense of security.

What do you mean...what are the positives...

It gives the child / children a safe loving environment while their parents basically get their **** together (not being mean).

It gives them a chance at routines / nuturing / loving...etc family while their parents are getting their act together...

I have a 5 year old foster child who when he moved in didn't know how to count past 1. He has only been with us less than a year and is now ready for kindergarden. He has also bonded with us (as much as his bio parents)...and when hurt, he cries for us, not bio parents. (I know this is an extreme case...but things aren't going as well as planned...meaning mom and dad haven't gotten their stuff together), so he has bonded with us as his parents.

It gives them stability in knowing that we will always be there to pick him up from day care / visits.../ always be here when he wakes up / will always have medicines for when he is ill, etc.

THIS IS TO Fashionista:

So, what are the negatives? I would really like to know your and others oppinions since I am a foster / adoptive mother.

I'm afraid there are more negatives than positives. I don't speak from experience but just from waht I've heard. There is one positive I can think of though.
If the foster parents do it right, it's the influence they can leave on an impressionable, scared and lonely child for the short time they are together.

One of the positives is that a few foster parents are nice and do not sexually abuse the kids in their care.

well, it keeps them from being aborted, or living on the streets, or from living with an abusive parent. it gives them a chance a life, even though it may be harder than for kids who dont live in foster homes, at least they have a chance at life.

most foster homes aren't positive and usually if a child is lucky enough to get into a good foster home they are moved soon anyway
