Probably because he realizes how lonely he is. This could either be a rebound and it won't last long if you go ahead and try to get back with him. Or he truly wants to be your friend again. I think it woudl be too soon to try and get back together with him eithe rin a relationship or friendship. I think it's okay to talk, but only casual. I woun'dt formally meet with him, unless you plan on tryin g to work it out. and from my experience, this never works out. Time is key, and although 2 months may seem like a long time, it isn't. Let things fall into place.

He is calling because he may still care about you. Could be he is sorry. So how do you feel about it? Can you forgive him or have you moved on? Don't know what happened between you. So how do you think you will feel about him in one week, one month, or one year? Maybe you should talk to him to clear the air and tell him it is completely over if that is how you feel. Sometimes when things end badly you need closure. He may need your forgiveness to move on. The possibilities are endless. Good luck in your decision.

there could be 2 reasons
1 he realized he messed up and hopes to win you back
2 he is trying to keep you single while he plays around that way if he falls on his face then you are still there for him
so you have to think if he's an *** or not to decide which of the 2 it is

first of all, did you break up because of another woman? maybe she dumped him and now he feels lonely and wants to get back in his comfort zone.
Ask him right out what is going on and what is this all about, make sure he is not using you for a temporary security blanket only to leave you again heartbroken and used.
Find out his intentions and make sure you know exactly what it is that you want out of this.

What are your conversations about? Maybe he is lonely, maybe he wants you back, maybe he just misses talking to you. If you want to know what is going on, you gotta ask! Just ask him "Why are you calling me" "Do you want to make up (only if you want to)?" Ask him what is going on. That is the quickest way to find out.

He probably wants you back- either that or he has had no luck and is lonely and needs someone to fill a void.

Maybe he thinks the break up was a mistake. I'd say give him a chance.

Maybe he thinks he made a mistake. Or maybe he misses you and wants to know how you're doing.
